Ferrari: Winter olympics – a splash of red on the slopes of sochi

Last Sunday, the day after the 22nd Winter Olympics got underway, something special happened for the Italian team on the slopes of Sochi, as it took its first two medals. It was a matter of great pride and of dreams realised for Christof Innerhofer, who took silver in the downhill and a place in history for Armin Zoeggler, who took bronze in the luge. It was an historic achievement as no other athlete had ever made it to the Olympic podium in the individual races in this discipline six time in a row over the past six Winter games. There was pride at Maranello too, especially for the staff who since 2006 have been working alongside the Italian Olympic Committee and started preparations for the Sochi Games in September two years ago, providing the Olympians with Ferrari technology and knowhow. As part of this collaborative project, the skiing and luge events benefited from work in the wind tunnel, aimed at optimizing the position of the athletes at the point of maximum speed, as well choosing the most efficient race suits. As for the luge, the engineers also experimented with materials and on evaluating new runners through simulation work carried out using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics.)
