Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team set for Berlin season finale

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team will bring their second season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to a close at the weekend with two home races in Berlin

  • Ian James: "It's going to be a very exciting championship finale, with virtually any outcome possible in the championships. #berlin will be a great test for the team as a whole and I, for one, can't wait to get the #racing underway!"
  • Nyck de Vries: "We know how tough it will be and how close everyone is in the standings, but we're going into the final round well prepared. We just need now to focus on the task at hand and do everything in our power"
  • Stoffel Vandoorne: "The world championship is still wide open. I'm a little bit down the running, so my task will definitely not be easy, but I've got nothing to lose"
  • Further information, statistics and facts about the upcoming E-Prix can be found in the Race Facts on our media site

The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team will be in #berlin this weekend (August 13-15) for the season finale of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The seventh and final double header of the year taking place there marks the end of Season 7.

The #berlineprix has been on the calendar of the all-electric #racing series ever since it first launched in 2013/2014, and twelve races have been staged so far in the German capital. Apart from on one occasion, the venue has always been Tempelhof Airport which is where #racing will take place again this year.

The Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team associate good memories with the #berlineprix, as it's where #stoffelvandoorne and #nyckdevries achieved the team's first one-two Formula E victory in last year's season finale.

Racing at the 2.355 km circuit will take place in both directions this year with Race 1 on Saturday running counter-clockwise and Sunday's second race clockwise. Drivers will have to take ten corners in all while under full load for 73% of the time. Top speed along the main straight will be in the region of 220 km/h.

Track characteristics in #berlin dictate that energy management and race strategy will have a particularly important role to play. The activation zone for Attack Mode will be on the outside of Turn 6 for Race 1 and in Turn 5 for Race 2. Mitch Evans (1:08.350 mins, counter-clockwise) and Stoffel (1:08.635 mins, clockwise) hold the lap records for the two layouts.

Comments ahead of the #berlineprix 2021

Ian James, Team Principal:
"Just one race weekend to go, and the championship fight is still very much in full swing. This season has already been an extremely close fight in both the teams' and drivers' championships, and we've managed to carry that into the last race of the season. It's going to be a very exciting championship finale, with virtually any outcome possible in the championships.

During the past race weekend, in London, we showed what we are capable of as a team. We returned to our true form, achieving the results we needed to get back in the fight. We will be carrying that momentum into the weekend in #berlin, building on the valuable experience we gathered during last year's #event. In Formula E, however, you always know to expect fresh challenges. And #berlin will be no exception.

Throughout this season we have strived to achieve the required level of operational excellence. #berlin will be a great test for the team as a whole and I, for one, can't wait to get the #racing underway!"

Nyck de Vries:
"I'm really looking forward to this weekend. We've obviously had a lot of races so far this season with plenty of moments full of highs and lows that stick in your mind. We're off now to the season finale in #berlin where we are about to discover who's going to be crowned champion in the end. I can't wait to see whether we can come out on top in the world championship ultimately. We know how tough it will be and how close everyone is in the standings, but we're going into the final round well prepared. We just need now to focus on the task at hand and do everything in our power. Hopefully, we'll have a good weekend!"

Stoffel Vandoorne:
"Well, let's do it! It's #berlin and the final double header of the season. I'm very much looking forward to this race weekend, because as you may recall, both myself and the team still have some pretty good memories from last year when I notched up my maiden victory in Formula E. Nyck also gave us our first one two win with P2 in the season finale. The track has suited us well in the past and I'm just really looking forward to it after the two rounds in London. Hopefully, I'll have a little more luck in #berlin so that I can finish the season on a high. The world championship is still wide open. I'm a little bit down the running, so my task will definitely not be easy, but I've got nothing to lose and can only gain, which is why I'm going into the weekend with an open mind and a clear head, hoping to post two good results."
