End of season regatta to be held in Tuscany - 11th Viareggio gathering of Historic Sailboats

Approximately 40 vessels will be participating in The 11th #viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats ‐ the
most important end‐of‐season regatta gathering for vintage, classic and traditional sailboats built between
1900 and the 1970s. Visitors will be able to go on board and experience these vintage jewels up close and
free of charge. Other events include visits to restorations being undertaken at the Del Carlo Shipyard and a
not‐to‐be‐missed exhibit on Commander Ajmone Cat’s historical voyages to Antarctica on the motorized
sailboat San Giuseppe Due.
PARTICIPATING SAILBOATS
About 40 vintage and classic boats that have already chosen to participate in the 11th #viareggio Gathering of
Historic Sailboats to be held October 8‐11, 2015 and organized by the Associazione #velestoriche Viareggio
(Viareggio Historic Sailboat Association) in collaboration with the Club Nautico Versilia (Versilia Nautical Club)
and the AIVE – Association Italiana Vele d’Epoca (Italian Vintage Sailboat Association). Almost all of the
registered sailboats are made of wood and they represent a precious record of 20th century yachting.
Among the latest to register is the lovely Valdora ketch, launched 80 years ago in 1935, the 24‐meter 1931
Patience and the 15‐meter Forban 5. There will also be an 8‐meter international tonnage race of historic
sailboats, among them the 1938 Miranda III, winner of the #italy Cup in 1950, the 1925 Margaret that belonged
to the Ballantine whiskey family, and the 1927 Bamba, which has just been splendidly restored by the Pezzini
Shipyard in #viareggio.
WELCOME ABOARD: free of charge visits to sailboats moored at dock.
As in past years, attendees can board the boats moored at dock. The owners who have agreed to visits will
make it possible for visitors to discover how these sailboats were made and how they work. Visitors will be able
to walk the wooden decks, explore below deck, take pictures and ask questions to better understand how to
sail on these Ladies of the Sea. It is a unique opportunity, especially for young visitors, to get to know and
experience the history of sailboats.
THE SANGERMANI CHALLENGE
Bufeo Blanco (1963), Chin Blu III (1965), Danae (1955), Ella (1960), Fantasia (1949), Leticia do Sol (1958), Namib
(196), and Valentina (1975). The famous and internationally renowned Sangermani Shipyard in Lavagna,
Liguria ‐ built all of these sailboats. These wooden sailboats were used for cruises and regattas and some of the
most important Mediterranean historic sailboat competitions. While gathered in #viareggio they will participate
in a special #competition at sea organized to showcase these representatives of Italian nautical pride.
VISIT TO RESTORATION WORK AT THE DEL CARLO SHIPYARD
On Friday October 9, after the first regatta, ship owners and their crews will be offered a guided tour of the
Francesco Del Carlo Shipyard in #viareggio to see up close the restoration work being done on important
vintage boats. For over 50 years this shipyard’s name has been synonymous with the restoration of historical
boats, especially wooden ones. The long list of restored boats includes the Patience, the Alzavola, the Magda
XIII, the Tirrenia II, the Capitan Lipari, The Blue Peter and the famous 1936 ketch Eilean owned by Panerai.
After the tour, participants will gather at the shipyard for drinks and dinner. On Saturday October 10, the Del
Carlo Shipyard will host its usual buffet dinner overlooking the boats moored at dock, organized by Paolo
Gozzini’s Excibus, owner of 1954 Bermudan sloop Nina V.
EXHIBITS: THE ANTARCTIC VOYAGES OF THE “SAN GIUSEPPE DUE” AND EMANUELA TENTI’S WATERCOLORS
From Friday October 9 to Sunday October 11 the Club Nautico Versilia di #viareggio, located right across from
the participating sailboats, will host an exhibit dedicated to the Antarctic voyages of Commander Giovanni
Ajmone Cat, who died in 2007. A series of images will narrate his explorations from the late 1960s to the early
1970s on the 16‐meter motorized sailboat “San Giuseppe Due.” This oak and iroko wood vessel was launched
in 1968 by the Palomba Shipyard in Torre del Greco (Naples) was a two mast felucca with lateen sails.
Currently the Gallinari Shipyard in Anzio is restoring this historic boat, which was donated to Italy’s Navy by
the Commander’s sister Rita Ajmone Cat. Entrance to the exhibit is free of charge.
This year the #viareggio Gathering of Historic Sailboats is also hosting the paintings of the well‐known artist
Emanuela Tenti of Genoa. Tenti specializes in watercolors of vintage boats and seascapes. Craftsman
Giovanni Caputo, a rigging master at the Antico Cantiere del Legno Aprea in Sorrento, will offer public
demonstrations in the use of ropes, splices, knots, repairs and leather protection.
