DUBLIN (Ireland), May 31st 2016: Nissan Europe and the World #food Programme (WFP) have announced the details of a Road Safety e-Learning course to ensure the safe transportation of people and humanitarian supplies.

The initiative was presented during the welcome reception of the annual Fleet Forum conference, which aims to inspire cleaner, safer, more efficient transport around the world. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Building Fleet Management Competence’.

Paul Willcox, Chairman for #nissan Europe said: “Nissan is committed to making mobility solutions as safe as possible and has an ambition to create a zero fatality motoring future. Safety is an integral pillar of Nissan’s Blue Citizenship program and #nissan is keen to support #wfp in the development of its Road Safety course.”

The new e-learning course, developed by #wfp and supported by #nissan, will help to guide WFP’s managers and drivers operating a 4,200-strong fleet of light vehicles, trucks and motorcycles. It has been designed to create a culture of road safety by complementing existing practical training programmes and providing additional guidance for #wfp fleet managers and drivers, thus enhancing humanitarian access to deep-field communities.

With about 88 percent of WFP’s 14,600 staff based in the field across approximately 80 countries, safety is a critical part of the organization’s day-to-day operations in ensuring the efficient delivery of #food assistance to the people who need it most. Often working in some of the hardest-to-reach communities in the world, threatened by natural disasters and conflict, road incidents are unfortunately an ever-present hazard due to imperfect road conditions.

“The majority of road traffic deaths occur in low- to middle-income countries, and this is where #wfp provides assistance to those in need on a daily basis. The Road Safety e-Learning course, for which #nissan provided funding, has come in a timely moment and will complement our efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our staff and the local communities we serve”, said Graham Young, Global Light Vehicle Fleet Manager at #wfp.

The development of the Road Safety e-Learning course forms one key part of a year-long collaboration between #nissan and #wfp to boost safety and sustainability in humanitarian mobility. The collaboration also addresses environmental sustainability in other parts of WFP’s supply chain, including Greenhouse Gas foot-printing of contracted freight activities and training to mainstream sustainable procurement practices. #nissan is supporting the projects with its expertise in sustainable technologies and has contributed an investment of 180,000 EUR.
