F1: Both drivers in the points at the Temple of Speed

The second Formula One Grand Prix after the summer break was hosted at #monza last weekend. The enthusiastic Italian crowd saw an exciting race which ended with both Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS #f1 Team drivers in the points. However, it was a result for the team that was hard earned.

As early as qualifying, it was apparent that the weekend at the 5.793 km circuit on the outskirts of Milan was going to be hotly contested. It was the second time this season that the Alternative Tyre Allocation (ATA) was applied, which meant that the teams had fewer sets of tyres of the different compounds available and were only allowed to use one compound in each of the three qualifying segments: Q1 (Hard), Q2 (Medium) and Q3 (Soft). George booked a place on the second row of the grid with P4 in a close-run qualifying session, while Lewis was just 0.15 seconds slower and had to settle for P8. In fact, the top nine were all within just 0.7 seconds of each other.

George managed to defend his fourth place at the start, but subsequently had to cede it to the faster Red Bull of Sergio Perez. He then held on to his P5 right through to the finish, despite incurring a five-second time penalty. Lewis opted for a different strategy, starting on the Hard compound. This yielded dividends after his stop when the change of tyres enabled him to overtake several drivers and move up to sixth place. A clash with McLaren driver Oscar Piastri resulted in a five-second time penalty for Lewis but, like George, he had built up a sufficient lead over his pursuers in the closing laps for the additional time to make no difference to his final result.

Customer #racing News: Third win of the season on third weekend of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup

Timur Boguslavskiy (FIA) and Raffaele Marciello (SUI) successfully defended their lead in the 2023 Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint Cup standings. Sharing the cockpit of the number 88 Mercedes-AMG GT3, the AKKODIS-ASP duo took their third win of the current campaign on the third sprint weekend of the year, this time hosted by the Hockenheimring. Mercedes-AMG Performance driver Marciello started from third on the grid in Sunday’s race and immediately gained one position before the field got bunched behind the safety car. Following the restart, Raffaele Marciello had the superior race pace and eventually took over at the front. The lead which the 28-year-old built up in his opening stint gave team-mate Boguslavskiy the relatively simple task of defending after the mandatory driver change. At the finish, they had stretched out a seven-second gap. Saturday’s race had ended in less satisfactory circumstances when Boguslavskiy had to park the car early after a contact with an opponent.

The Mercedes-AMG Customer #racing teams also enjoyed a successful weekend in the Silver Cup. In this particular class, Mercedes-AMG Junior Jordan Love (AUS) and his Haupt #racing team-mate Alain Valente (SUI) won Saturday’s race ahead of the Madpanda Motorsport pairing of Ezequiel Perez Companc (ARG) and Jesse Salmenautio (FIN). In the second race on Sunday, the #77 and #90 Mercedes-AMG GT3s finished second and third respectively. These two strong results elevated Jordan Love to the top of the Silver Cup sprint standings. The second Mercedes-AMG GT3 of the Haupt #racing Team driven by Sébastien Baud (FRA) and Hubert Haupt (GER) secured the class win in the Gold Cup in Sunday’s race.

Win number ten for Boguslavskiy and Marciello: The victory for the AKKODIS-ASP duo in Sunday’s race was their tenth in the GT World Challenge Europe, eight of which came in the Sprint Cup and two in the Endurance Cup. Boguslavskiy’s and Marciello’s first ever shared triumph came on 9th August 2020 in the Sprint Cup at Misano.
