Eight competitors took part in the Alpine Elf #rally Trophy on the Rallye du Var, the scene of the FFSA French Tarmac #rally Championship season-finale. Although Grégory Fontalba had already secured the title at the previous round, several places were still up for grabs on the roads of Sainte-Maxime.
Grégory Fontalba immediately took the lead, but an incident at the stop point on SS3 turned the tables. After losing his brakes, Pierre Roché couldn't avoid running into his rival's car and Loïc Panagiotis took advantage to take the lead by 3.0s in the final kilometres of the day.
After losing nearly a minute in the first timed sector on Friday, Fabrice Bect set the fastest times from SS2 to SS5 before Pierre Roché broke the streak on Saturday morning in Pignans. Meanwhile, Grégory Fontalba reclaimed the lead over Loïc Panagiotis by 1.7s before heading to the service park at midday. These two duels also saw the Alpines make a strong impression, as in SS8 where three A110 Rallies were in the top ten of the general classification at the Circuit du Var.
At dusk, the order and increasingly tight quartet were upturned. Pierre Roché, who set the fastest time on SS9, saw his hopes vanish when he went off the road two stages later. Loïc Panagiotis also retired a few minutes later with a mechanical failure.
Grégory Fontalba took on the last three Sunday stages with a 27.2s lead over Fabrice Bect, but the leader had brake issues and was powerless against the offensive of his pursuer. Not one to give up, Grégory Fontalba nevertheless replied with the best time in the penultimate timed sector to cut his deficit to 9.5s, but his push ultimately forced him into a mistake in the last kilometres of the course.
Meanwhile, Fabrice Bect kept his cool to win by almost half a minute over Jean-François Mourgues, the 2001 French Gravel #rally Champion making a strong impression with four stage wins on his trophy debut. Also new to the Alpine Elf #rally Trophy, Kévin Portal completed the podium ahead of Armand Fumal and Romuald Lamboley. Fabrice Bect, who sealed the Gentlemen's title, also scored his first success in the French 2WD #rally Championship, completing Alpine's grand slam in this category on the 2022 national and international scene.
The main contenders of this season paced by four different winners from six rounds will be rewarded at an awards ceremony in early 2023. Season three of the Alpine Elf #rally Trophy will kick off on the roads of the Rhône Charbonnières #rally from 20 to 22 April.
Fabrice Bect: "We had a superb #rally despite two or three mistakes on our part. This win is a big achievement because it's the first time we have driven the Alpine A110 #rally so fast. We have been 'at war' for three days and enjoyed ourselves with this great car. It's a source of pride to win the Gentlemen's title, but it's a shame that we didn't finish the Coeur de France, as we had both crowns within our reach. Rallying is like that sometimes, and we'll see what we can do next season!"
