Suzuki riders intend to turn fortunes around on Sunday

Comunicato Stampa disponibile solo in lingua originale.

Alex Rins: 11th – 1’58.318 (+ 0.551)
Joan Mir: 12th – 1’58.543 (+ 0.776)

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s riders started Saturday at Silverstone on top form, making the most of fine and warm conditions in the morning to build on the strong lap times set a day earlier. Their pace and confidence around the British track saw them complete a nail-biting FP3 in the Top 10, and secure direct passage to Q2.

After an FP4 where Alex Rins and Joan Mir gave their race pace a go, it was soon onto final qualifying. The pace was sizzling among the MotoGP field, with miniscule gaps separating the remaining 12 riders. The Suzuki duo gave their all to grab a good grid spot, but despite their efforts they eventually took 11th and 12th at the chequered flag - a few positions lower than expected. However, Rins and Mir are motivated to turn it around in the race.

Alex Rins:

“I’m a little bit disappointed because I was doing a good job in the all the sessions, and then qualifying didn’t go our way at all. In the first run, due to a mistake between Michelin and the Team I went out on a hard front tyre instead of a soft tyre, as planned and of course this didn’t give me good feeling. Once in the garage we found and fixed the problem and fit a new soft, but then there wasn’t much time left and I only had one fast lap attempt. Despite everything, I did still improve my lap time by a 10th and did my personal best lap at this track. Fourth row is a long way back, but I have very strong pace and I would like to think that I can battle at the front.”

Joan Mir:

“I improved my lap time, but it wasn’t enough. Honestly, I was expecting a bit more today. We made a small improvement on the bike, but the session was very tight, and everyone was going quicker than yesterday. It’s hasn’t been easy, but I do feel better with the bike this weekend and my confidence is coming back. I want to make some steps tomorrow, and let’s see what we can fight for during the race.”

Livio Suppo - Team Manager:

“For sure these aren’t the start positions we were looking for after a very promising start to the weekend in the practice sessions, but both riders have very good race pace so we’re looking forward to the race. We need to apologise to Alex, because he took his first qualifying exit on a hard front tyre, which should’ve been a soft. Unfortunately, the last five serial numbers of the hard and of the soft tyres in Alex’s allocation were exactly the same, and this created the problem. We asked Michelin to mount the soft tyre on the rim, but they mounted the hard. We should have double checked it but unfortunately, we didn’t.”
