The brand new MICHELIN Guide Beijing 2022 was released today through Internet live streaming, adding 1 two-Star and 4 one-Star restaurants to its new selection. The third MICHELIN Guide for Beijing shows a year that features overall improvement and highlights stable growth.

In total, the new edition showcases 100 restaurants, including 2 three-Star restaurants, 3 two-Star restaurants, 29 one-Star restaurants as well as 18 Bib Gourmand establishments. The MICHELIN Green Star, which was awarded for the 2nd year in Beijing, continues to highlight one restaurant that stands as a role model in the promotion of sustainable gastronomy.

“The inspection team is pleased to see that more restaurants have grown to face challenges with more confidence and assurance in 2021. Healthy and steady growth is shown in a wide variety of cuisine where positive competition and progress has been noted in listed restaurants too. Authentic regional cuisine and creative gastronomy are introduced along with talented professionals from different regions. Beijing has demonstrated its charm and its potential as a great gourmet destination,” says Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides. “Meanwhile, the inspection team remains very positive to the selection of Beijing and very much looking forward to seeing new faces and evolution in the industry.”

1 restaurant joins the two-MICHELIN Star league

In the 2022 selection, the 2 restaurants which were awarded three Stars in the last vintage maintain the highest distinction for another year – Vegetarian restaurant King’s Joy and Taizhou cuisine restaurant Xin Rong Ji (Xinyuan South Road).

In the two-Star category, restaurant Chao Shang Chao, which is making its debut in the MICHELIN Guide, is the newest addition. Chef Zhang, who previously worked at outstanding establishments in Hong Kong and Shanghai, ensures that every single dish being served is impeccably designed. A hallway lined with steeply priced dried fish maw not only greets diners but also hints at the upmarket restaurant’s signature. Featuring authentic Chaozhou cuisine, the restaurant offers a great variety of seafood dishes. Braised fish maw in abalone sauce and wok-fried coral grouper are the unmissable highlights.

2 other restaurants maintain their two-MICHELIN Star distinction, bringing the total of restaurants “worth a detour” to 3. These are Jingji, specializing in Beijing cuisine and Shanghai Cuisine, which shows an astute understanding of cuisine by reinterpreting classics with a contemporary perspective.

4 new one-Star Restaurants

4 new Stars are handed out to restaurants joining the one-Star list. A selection of restaurants which illustrates the diversity of the Beijing food scene, with establishments offering Chinese local cuisines such as Beijing, Guandong, Huaiyang Western food, vegan and innovative cuisine.

Furong, a brand featuring Hunan cuisine launched by Xin Rong Ji Group in 2020, enters the selection with one Star. Named after the provincial flower of Hunan, Furong offers authentic Hunan classics bursting with flavors. Guests come for the fish head covered in chopped chilies and porcini-pork tripe soup with pickled radish. Chef Wang was at the helm of various kitchens for over ten years. His passion for gourmet cooking drives him to pay delicate attention to every little detail of his creations.

Ling Long, which joined the MICHELIN Guide last year, has been promoted to one Star for 2022. Led by creative young head chef Jason Liu, the kitchen team proudly presents seasonally inspired menus to gourmets. The menu consists of up to seven artfully plated creations showcasing French presentation while tasting unmistakably Chinese, with ingredients that are mostly sourced locally or fermented in-house.

Lu Style (Anding Road), which was also recommended last year, has been promoted to one Star in the 2022 edition of the Guide. Chef Peng knows the Shandong culinary art inside out. His creations are known to be rooted in tradition yet jazzed up by modern touches. Customers can also find exotic staples such as the giant mixed-grain pancake from the Mount Yimeng area, and their artisan yogurt freshly made daily from donkey milk, nicely rounding off the meal.

Opera Bombana has won the hearts of inspectors since the first edition of MICHELIN Guide Beijing. 2022 sees it successfully promoted to one MICHELIN Star. Opera Bombana is the brainchild of renowned chef Umberto Bombana. Order the classic degustation menu to sample his signatures. Executive chef Andrea Susto brings with him to Beijing the philosophy of blending tradition, innovation, and a commitment to bring out the best in high-quality ingredients to create an outstanding Italian dining experience.

A popular distinction among our readers and users since its launch in 1996, the Bib Gourmand highlights restaurants within the MICHELIN Guide selection that offer the most attractive quality-price ratios (In Beijing, three courses for a maximum price of RMB300, excluding drinks.) 2022 sees 1 new addition to the Bib Gourmand list, with another 17 restaurants making it for another year.

Among the new places, restaurant Zen has been serving Sichuanese classics on the bustling main street since 2016. The signature kung pao chicken is basted in seasoning while being tossed in the wok, requiring shrewd judgment on the part of the Chef. Blanched napa cabbage soaks up the essence of the duck and chicken stock that takes two days to prepare.

King’s Joy’s sustainable commitments highlighted for another year with the MICHELIN Green Star

Among the most committed restaurants across the globe, striving for a more sustainable gastronomy, King’s Joy is a perfect example of a MICHELIN Green Star restaurant. It offers vegetarian cuisine using green, seasonal produce that is sourced from local, organic farms, reduces energy and resource consumption by recycling and banning disposable items, and promotes a sustainable lifestyle through community activities.

The MICHELIN Green Star highlights restaurants that have established systems of operations or sustainable practices that are environmentally meaningful when it comes to the origin of ingredients, the use of seasonal produce, food waste minimization, and the communication between the team and the guests regarding the restaurant’s sustainable approach.
