Algarve’s rollercoaster the next port of call in 2021

After two intense races in Qatar to kick-off the new season, the MotoGP™ World Championship now moves to Europe, and the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal will play host to what’s sure to be an enticing round three.
Alex Rins comes into this new race weekend on his Suzuki GSX-RR after achieving sixth place in the Qatar GP and equalling his best Losail finish with fourth in the Doha GP. This solid start to the season stands him in good stead ahead of the European leg, although a difficult race in Portugal last year meant he only managed 15th place. However, Rins is in good shape and ready to aim high this weekend.
Joan Mir didn’t have the easiest start to the season, but he took decent points with a fourth and a seventh in the first two rounds. Last year in Portugal the World Champion was unable to finish the race, but it’s a circuit he is keen to ride again, and he wants to settle the score this time out.
The Algarve International Circuit is still a relative unknown for MotoGP riders and teams alike, with the track only added to the calendar during last season’s disrupted schedule. However, the sporting complex, located close to Portimão on Portugal’s picturesque Algarve, has become a firm fan favourite due to its ‘rollercoaster’ style layout with plenty of ups, downs, and thrilling action.

“Qatar wasn’t easy but we learned a lot and we collected a lot of data to help us in these next races. Now we are back in Europe and we’re keen to get back onto the podium. Portugal is not a track we know very well, so it’s hard to predict how the weekend will be, but as always we’ll be giving our maximum to get the most out of our bikes and riders and achieve good results here.”
Alex Rins:
“I’m very happy to arrive in Portimão because it’s a circuit I really like and it’s very enjoyable to ride. There are lot of ups and downs and it’s a lot of fun on the MotoGP bike. I’m really excited to meet up with my team again and to get back on my bike! I’ll give my all and let’s see where we end up.”
Joan Mir:
“I’m really looking forward to starting the race weekend in Portimão, because last year we had bad luck and I had to retire from the race, which was a shame, so this year I want to have a better experience. It’s a track that I really enjoy and I think that it could suit our bike quite well too. It will be important to score points and continue improving, and I can’t wait to get back on the bike!”
