Exposure Award 2020 recipient announced
The compelling work by this year’s Exposure Award recipient Xu Guanyu bridges the gap between the personal and political while highlighting the similarities and differences between two nations through an imaginative, intelligent approach.
We are delighted to announce the recipient of this year’s Exposure Award is Guanyu Xu with his series Temporarily Censored Home. A powerful body of work exploring sexuality, familial life and freedom, Xu secretly created temporary photographic installations at his childhood home in Bejing, which he then photographed and took down before his parents returned. Speaking about how he conceived the series, Xu says: ‘Growing up in China with limited representation of LGBTQ people, I turned my attention to Western films and fashion […] the juxtaposition of torn pages from film and fashion magazines that attracted me during my teenage years and staged self-portraits with other gay men in the U.S creates a self-reflective relationship between the image production of power and my investigation of the intersectionality of race and sexuality.’
Xu is represented by Gaotai Gallery, the only #contemporaryart gallery in China’s Xinjiang region featuring works revolving around timely concerns, including environmental, gender and cultural. His work will be exhibited at Shanghai’s Modern Studio space alongside runner-up Sameer Tawde’s Dialogues of an Introvert project from September 11 to 20, 2020. Twade is represented by Hsinchu’s UP Gallery. The Exposure Award is powered by Modern Eye.
Acknowledging that 2020 has been a challenge for the arts community, we will be running a special online exhibition with all of the shortlisted artists from this year’s Exposure Award. Works will be available to view here, on the #photofairs website, from September 11 to October 9, 2020.
