KTM’s Webb and Walker 2-3 in 2016 SuperEnduro World Championships; Lettenbichler Junior World Champ

The battle for the title came right down to the final lap or the last race of the season where Colton Haaker and Cody Webb, knowing the title was at stake, passed each other about four times.
KTM factory riders Taylor Robert, Alfredo Gomez and Taddy Blazusiak took the next three places in the final standings.
Jonny Walker who was one of the most successful riders throughout the six-round season on the KTM #250excf, went into the final round with a narrow one-point lead over Haaker. But it was hero points to the British rider who had to muster all his courage and resilience to fight the good fight on the last night of the championship. Walker had in fact picked up a painful leg injury in the fifth round in Prague.
While the title went to Haaker, it was Webb that pocketed the sixth round glory after a season that saw him win three of the six rounds and share equal points with Haaker in a fourth on his KTM #250xcf. Meanwhile Haaker’s performances were on the ascendency in the second half of the season and he finally wrapped up the title by a margin of five points. Walker took victory in two rounds, was second in two others, but finished further down the order in the final two rounds because of his injury.
KTM’s Blazusiak, who has been the standard bearer of the discipline in recent years during which it has become increasingly popular, missed the two rounds in South America because of a thumb injury. He won the first of Saturday’s night’s three finals with his KTM 350 EXC-F but then had some bad luck in the second race.
Webb: “It’s been an incredible season. For it to come down to the final corner of the final lap shows just how tight the #racing has been. Obviously I’m a little gutted to not be world champion but I can hold my head high because I gave it everything I had tonight and nothing less. Looking back, those mistakes in Argentina and Prague were costly, but I won three overall rounds, so I can be proud of that.”
Walker: “To lose the title fight in the final round is tough to take but that’s #racing I suppose. Honestly, I was lucky to race tonight. I’m really sure how I managed it because I actually broke the fibula in my lower right leg last weekend in Prague. So effectively I’ve raced two rounds with a broken leg. But I’m a fighter and I put way too much effort in during the winter to quite. I couldn’t not try. I wish I was healthier to battle with #codywebb and Colton Haaker but that’s the way it went. I gave it all I had.”
Blazusiak: “It was great to come out with a win in race one. I got a clean start and pretty much stayed out from for most of it. The other two races just didn’t go my way, crashes and mistakes cost be a better shot at a better overall result. Overall, it’s been a tough season but I’ll regroup and come back stronger.”
Gomez: “It’s been a great night but unfortunately I just missed out on getting a podium result in my home race. I had a good night. Mistakes always happen in #superenduro but generally I rode strong during all the races. I’m pleased to end the championship on a high.”
In the Junior Class, KTM’s Manuel Lettenbichler wrapped up his season in the same dominant way that he had begun. After already securing the title on the fifth and penultimate round in Prague, the young German rider won all three of his finals on the KTM 300 EXC to finish with a 59-point advantage. Manuel is the teenage son of well-known rider Andreas Lettenbichler.
Lettenbichler: “I’m so happy right now, it’s incredible to be the #superenduro Junior World Champion. This season has been amazing. I knew I had a good lead in the series coming into Madrid but the nerves were still there. Winning the first race to win the title was fantastic. I couldn’t do this without the support from #ktm and of course my father.”
