DTM - Mercedes-AMG, Zandvoort: Race 2

  • Pascal Wehrlein (gooix Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) places sixth in second race at Zandvoort
  • Wehrlein five points behind DTM championship leader after 18 races this season
  • Christian Vietoris (Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) and Gary Paffett (EURONICS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) also finish in Top Ten
  • Ulrich Fritz: “More should certainly have been possible, but at least we reduced the gap on Audi in the drivers' and manufacturers' championship, while extending our lead in the team standings.”
At Zandvoort this weekend in front of 31,000 spectators, Mercedes-AMG driver Pascal Wehrlein (gooix Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) finished the eighth race of the 2015 DTM season in sixth place. The winner of Saturday’s race at the Norisring thus secured vital points in the DTM championship standings. After eight out of 18 races on the calendar, he is on 76 points, the same as Mattias Ekström (Audi), who is second in the standings. Both of them are five points behind the leader, Jamie Green (Audi). Wehrlein’s fellow Mercedes-AMG drivers Christian Vietoris (Original-Teile Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) and Gary Paffett (EURONICS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) also finished the race in the Top Ten by coming home eighth and tenth respectively. With three Mercedes-AMG drivers in the Top Ten, Mercedes-Benz reduced the gap on Audi in the manufacturers' championship and extended their lead in the team standings. Paul Di Resta (Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) and Maximilian Götz (Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) finished the second race this weekend in P14 and P16 respectively. Robert Wickens (SILBERPFEIL Energy Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) placed 19th and Lucas Auer (BWT Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) was 20th. Daniel Juncadella (PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM) retired after a contact with another car. The next race weekend: The DTM heads from the North Sea coast to Spielberg in Austria for the fifth race weekend of the season, July 31st-August 2nd. Our speed was good, and I think we could possibly have got more out of this race. Unfortunately, my start was really poor. We’ve been having a lot of problems with the clutch this year, and once again today, it wasn’t working properly. My pace was good until the scrap with Molina. The car was so badly damaged that I had to defend my position strongly at the end. I was afraid I was going to get a puncture. My steering was totally out, and I was missing several aerodynamic components. Not much more was possible. I was behind Pascal for a long time. He was having some problems with his pace. My car felt good and my speed was good. I could have overtaken the BMW in front, but it was obvious that we had to leave the most points for Pascal to pick up. The start wasn’t great, but I didn’t lose too much on the others. Then we had a pretty slow pit stop which lost us a lot of time. The pace of the car was good. Big thanks to the guys for getting the car out today, but we struggled just to find the optimum setup for qualifying and were out of position. From our position in qualifying, it was very difficult to overtake in the race, but our pace was really strong.” Maximilian Götz (29, Germany): P16 Car number: 84 Team: PETRONAS Mercedes-AMG ( Mercedes-AMG DTM Team Mücke ) Car: Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM “P14 on the grid was my best qualifying result to date. Looking at the weekend as a whole, I’m really happy. In the race, I lost a place to Robert at the start. After that, I managed to defend 15th position successfully. I stayed out and delayed my pit stop for a long time, which allowed me to accumulate my first kilometres in the lead in the DTM. If we’d stopped a bit earlier, maybe we could have got more out of this race. But the upward trend is there for everyone to see – especially in qualifying. Now I’m looking forward to Spielberg. I got hit by three Audi drivers in two laps. In my opinion, that simply shouldn’t happen. It really was a weekend to forget. We now have to analyse what went wrong and then improve. I fought with a couple of other drivers in the turn before the contact happened. Mortara was behind me as we reached the fast section of the circuit. I tried to give him a little space, but he made contact with me, pushing me off track, and I hurt my back in the process.”Es Ulrich Fritz, Head of Mercedes-AMG DTM: “Obviously, we are not satisfied with today’s result overall. Still, three Mercedes-Benz drivers in the Top Ten is not exactly bad. More should certainly have been possible, but at least we reduced the gap on Audi in the drivers' and manufacturers' championship, while extending our lead in the team standings.”
