Volkswagen - Tanner Foust wins first race of double-header weekend in Daytona

Scott Speed and Tanner Foust battle mechanical and track challenges all weekend to bring home the team’s second victory of the year.

The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team battled adversity to take home its second win and third podium finish of 2015 at GRC Daytona. Tanner Foust, driver of the No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Volkswagen Beetle GRC, took his first win of the season, and his fifth career win in the series.

After starting sixth in the final, Foust tactfully evaded a first lap scrum to score the victory, advancing him for the time being to the top of the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship points. On Sunday, Foust finished fifth after suffering mechanical issues caused by contact while battling for third position, moving him to third in points.

“Extreme heat combined with the double-header factor made this one of the most brutal racing weekends I’ve seen in rallycross,” said Foust. “I’m happy we came out with a win on Saturday. We were turning quick laps all weekend, but we were constantly hit with mechanical problems, including a flywheel bolt issue and the loss of four-wheel drive in Sunday’s final. I have to thank the Volkswagen Andretti team for working so hard this entire weekend, now we can look ahead to North Carolina.”

Scott Speed, driver of the No. 41 SHARK WEEK Volkswagen Beetle GRC, fought mechanical issues all weekend. After missing practice and qualifying sessions for the first race, Speed advanced to second place in both his heats, only to suffer another mechanical issue in the semi-final that took him out of Saturday’s contention.

Speed’s bad luck continued on Sunday. After missing qualifying and heat sessions, he pushed the No. 41 up to third place in his semi-final, securing his spot in the final. With a great start, Speed was forced into a wall while running third, ending his podium hopes. After three rounds, Speed Speed now stands seventh in the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship points.

“Just an all-around unlucky weekend for the whole Volkswagen Andretti team,” said Speed. “We couldn't catch a break. We had such high hopes coming into this double-header weekend, but nothing went our way. We know we have the speed and we know we can win, so to come out here and not show it definitely hurts. We at least know what we need to work on with the SHARK WEEK Beetle GRC during our week off before North Carolina and fingers crossed we can put on a good show there. Big thanks to the crew who worked incredibly hard to get Tanner (Foust) and I back on-track all weekend—all we can do now is work on getting those points back and bump us back up in the championship standings.”

In two weeks, the team heads to North Carolina for a fourth round of the rallycross season. The event takes place on July 3 – 5. NBC will air the race on Sunday, July 5 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
