Maserati Trofeo World Series: Monti triumphs in Race 2 at Paul Ricard - Ragazzi leads the standings

It was French driver Romain Monti who secured Race 2 at Paul Ricard in the first round of the 2015 Maserati Trofeo World Series. Taking second was Riccardo Ragazzi who, thanks to his Race 1 victory on Saturday, tops the overall standings. Taking third was another Frenchman, Stephane Panepinto.

Turning to the race itself, the safety was called for on lap 1 to allow a few dangerously-positioned cars to be removed. This all came about after a clash between Emanuele Smurra (from team Redragon), Richard Denny and Barrie Baxter; they all had to throw in the towel.

The safety car was on for two laps and, when it went off, Ragazzi cruised into the lead from a starting spot on tenth (a grid position he was allocated based on the Race 1 results being inverted). Ragazzi overtook Monti, Panepinto and Andreas Segler on the way to his lead before Monti retook command and held on to the finish.

Fourth went to Ange Barde, from team Boutsen Ginion, who started on ninth. He beat off Segler and Giuseppe Fascicolo.

Also making his debut this weekend was another young Italian, Alessandro Fogliani, who earned his spot thanks to performing well in the Maserati Racing Academy at Vallelunga last month. He was flanked by an instructor at Paul Ricard and his best showing was a 14° place.

This round also saw Patrick Zamparini drive a GT4-spec Maserati GranTurismo MC in what was a first step for a possible entry into international series in this class. Zamparini's performance did not attract any championship points.

“It was a great race", reflected Romain Monti. "The safety car came on at the start but I couldn't work out why. I tried to do my best at the restart and found myself in top spot after overtaking my rivals. This is my second win in the Maserati Trofeo and I would like to pick up a few more. I will be back in this series for sure".
