Alessi - In-Possible

The Alessi Museum collection, with 25,000 objects and 19,000 designs, offers a fascinating cross-section of contemporary design, a formidable perspective on the thousands of approaches to the world of design. Sketches, renderings, technical drawings, prototypes of projects that were never realised, first versions, research into new colours or finishings, prints, semi-finished products... Materials that describe the complex weave of factors involved in the creation of an industrial product. This rich and varied weave includes refined, cultural and social elements, but also practical, concrete and financial factors. It also reveals a crucial aspect: the meeting between designer and company. An industrial design object is a collective work that emerges from a partnership between the designer on one hand and, on the other, a series of skills that - in what is often a long and laborious process - contribute to bringing the product to market. It is a meeting of talents, experiences and points of view in which the company, involved in the dialogue with the designers, acts as the "publisher of the work".

The exhibition invites viewers for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the most important and influential design companies in the world of design. The exhibition will be presenting for the first time more than fifty designs by some of the world's best and most renowned designers and architects, including Philippe Starck, Zaha Hadid, Patricia Urquiola, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, and Ettore Sottsass, whose development process was halted before they reached the finish line. Sketches and simulations of the development stages will be presented next to each design, as well as a description of the work process from the commissioning or initiation stage to the moment the company, or the designer, chose to halt the development process and freeze the idea.
