Final Weekend! Out of Africa, Endless Knot, and Kentridge on the Outdoor Screen Closing Soon

Looking for something to do this weekend? Don’t miss the final days of some of our favorite exhibitions of the year. Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s MorakotWilliam Kentridge’s films on the outdoor screen, and Out of Africa: Selections from the Kramlich Collection (featuring another William Kentridge piece) all close April 30. Plus, there’s only one week left to see Endless Knot: Struggle and Healing in the Buddhist World, which includes art by this year’s Lijin Lecturer, Tsherin Sherpa.

Fifty-Third Annual UC Berkeley Master of Fine Arts Exhibition

Opening May 10: continuing a tradition that has lasted for over half a century, we are pleased to present the thesis exhibition of UC Berkeley’s MFA graduates. This year’s exhibition includes the exceptional work of Irma Yuliana Barbosa, Gericault De La Rose, Eniola Fakile, Juniper Harrower, Fei Pan, Tiare Ribeaux, and Samuel Wildman.

What Has Been and What Could Be: The #bampfa Collection

Opening June 7: the lower level galleries are transforming! What Has Been and What Could Be inaugurates a year-long presentation of our collection, bringing a contemporary perspective to the museum’s global art holdings. We are excited to #show works that span multiple generations and geographies—presented in a way you’ve likely never seen them before.

Saturday, May 6: we invite you to join our community of friends and supporters to honor two path-breaking creatives with deep ties to the Bay Area: filmmaker and artist Cauleen Smith and conceptual artist and photographer Catherine Wagner. Artist and filmmaker Arthur Jafa will offer a special tribute to Smith, while Connie Butler, Chief Curator of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, will offer Wagner’s tribute.

Sunday, May 7, 5 PM: following the Art + Film Benefit, Cauleen Smith will present a screening of her acclaimed 1998 feature debut, Drylongso, set and shot on location in Oakland. The film, shown in a new 4K restoration, is “a resonant and visionary examination of violence (and its reverberations), friendship, and gender.” (Film at Lincoln Center)

Odessa’s Uncompromising Eccentric: The Films of Kira Muratova

Through May 14: We are pleased to welcome Stanislav Menzelevskyi of the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Center of Ukraine to introduce several screenings of our Kira Muratova retrospective. Muratova’s utterly fearless films play in our theater through mid May!

Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Cinema of Now

Through May 12: Apichatpong Weerasethakul's visit to #bampfa may be over, but there's still time to immerse yourself in his ethereally beautiful work. The Adventure of Iron PussyMemoriaMekong Hotel, and Cemetery of Splendor are all coming up in the next two weeks.

Lijin Lecture: Tsherin Sherpa on Art from the Himalayas: Past into Present

Sunday, April 30, 12 PM: celebrated Tibetan artist Tsherin Sherpa will give the annual Lijin Lecture this weekend. The artist will discuss present-day Himalayan art and its connections with traditional practices. Sherpa, whose own work is currently on view in Endless Knot, splits his time between California and Kathmandu and his work draws on Buddhist traditions to comment on his diasporic experience. A documentary about Sherpa's life and career, Above and Below by Sheri Brenner, will immediately follow the lecture as part of the program.

SFFILM 66th San Francisco International Film Festival Golden Gate Awards winners

This past weekend marked the close of an exciting two weeks of SFFILM screenings at #bampfaEarth Mama, which won an audience award, had its California premiere at #bampfa to a sold out house. Snow and the Bear and What These Walls Won’t Hold, which also screened at #bampfa, were recognized with jury prizes.
