Lee Lozano. Strike | March 8 - July 23 2023

The #pinacotecaagnelli is pleased to announce a new exhibition dedicated to #leelozano (1930—1999), a pioneering artist and key figure from the New York 60's and early 70's art scene. The show, which has been conceived and produced by #pinacotecaagnelli, will take place from March 8th to July 23rd 2023 in the museum's spaces in Turin and then travel to the Bourse de Commerce — Pinault Collection in Paris from September 20th 2023 to February 120024.

Strike, curated by Sarah Cosulich and Lucrezia Calabrö Visconti, is the first monographic survey of Lee Lozano's work in Italy. The exhibition emerges from the institution's latest and contemporary mission to bring to light unprecedented artistic practices that dialogue with the historical and symbolic heritage of the venue as a former factory.

The show will bring together an extensive selection of works by the artist, spanning her brief yet extremely prolific career dating from 1960 to 1972. Trained as a painter in Chicago, #leelozano moved to New York and swiftly rose to recognition in the 60's art scene, where she brought forward a multifaceted oeuvre, engaging both with painting and a deeply conceptual practice. She participated in the social and artistic environment of the time - dominated by pop art, minimalism and conceptual art - whilst maintaining a radical attitude and standing against any form of classification and systemic power. Strike will present a cohesive path through her diverse bodies of work: it will take its lead from her figurative expressionist drawings and paintings, moving to the large-size oil-on-canvases series of the Tools, and following their formal evolution into minimalist abstraction. The exhibition will also include a selection of the artist's Language Pieces, flagging her transition to an entirely conceptual phase which ended in 1972 with Dropout Piece, that would finally mark her abandonment of the art scene.

Conceived to be presented specifically in the spaces of #pinacotecaagnelli in Turin and, later, in those of the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, both exhibitions - curated by Sarah Cosulich and Lucrezia Calabrö Visconti - will be articulated through two distinct yet connected exhibition displays. The two shows will be a major opportunity to bring to attention the work of a revolutionary artist esteemed by critics but less known by the general public, especially in Europe. Both exhibitions will culminate in a publication developed in collaboration by the two institutions and published in English, Italian and French, offering an in-depth investigation into the artist's work.
