Andrea Valleri: "Napaleo-Dialogos"

From December 28th, 2022 to February 20th, 2023 at the Epigraphic Museum of Athens, the last exhibition of the Venetian artist’s exhibition series.

On December 28th, 2022, #andreavalleri will inaugurate "Dialogos" at the Epigraphic Museum of Athens, the last stage of the Neopaleo project. The exhibition will be open to the public until February 20th, 2023. After Venice, Samos, and Messolonghi the four exhibitions of the Venetian artist, scheduled for 2022 and promoted by the Contini Art Gallery in Venice and Cortina d'Ampezzo, will end in the Greek capital city.

With Dialogos, #andreavalleri will be the first artist in the world to exhibit within the prestigious setting of the Epigraphic Museum of Athens; in fact, the museum contains the largest number - 14,000 - and the most important epigraphs found in Greece.

Dialogos is meant to be the suggestion and the conclusion of an ideal path according to which history and growth of culture result from a constant confrontation of positions; this confrontation takes place in the present and cannot escape the patterns of the past that relives in our memory.

Regarding this, we quote an excerpt from the introductory note to the exhibition by #mariannasavrami, Phd. architect of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage of Greece and curator of the exhibition: "Andrea Valleri's approach represents an original intellectual adventure. His artworks are the expression of a personal interpretation and attribution of meanings from ancient symbolism and philosophy; as he says, they remain unchanged in the cyclical course of time. In his artwork we find the myth of the Centaur, an ancient archetype of the health of existence; through this and other artwork, the author shows us the meeting point between the past and the future. In the way, he expresses himself in his paintings and sculptures #andreavalleri shows us that things cease to be mere external objects. They enter an environment intended for and subject to constant human interpretation, an environment that becomes known to the viewer through the artist's pop language of consistent forms. Finally, it is pleonastic to say that the artist's perspective highlights the foundational value in the time of ancient Greek culture, as antiquity constitutes a dynamic in constant evolution."

Andrea Valleri's exhibitions are promoted by the Contini Art Gallery in collaboration with some of the most important Cultural Institutions in Venice and Greece: the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation of Venice, the National Archaeological Museum of Samos, the National Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens, the National Epigraphic Museum of Athens, and the Region of Western Greece (Messolonghi).

The Contini Art Gallery has published a catalog (English-Greek-Italian) to accompany the exhibitions, containing the entire exhibition under the title ΝΕΟΠΑΛΑΙΟ ("NEOPALEO").

Biography

Andrea Valleri was born in Venice on December 14 , 1959. After classical high school studies, he graduated in philosophy in 1985. Venetian by origin and Greek by adoption, he began his career teaching as a native Italian speaker in Athens. Since 1989 he has taught philosophy at the "Cavanis" institute in Venice.

In his artwork, the symbolic power of ancient myths and scenarios of the classical world is accompanied by a contemporary language derived from Pop-Art that amplifies the message for the modern visitor. Intellectual and philosophical research tends to create an art composed of interpenetrating fragments, a synthesis of collective historical and cultural memory. Valleri's art wants to reconnect the viewer with the historical tradition from which it comes and of which it constitutes the solid foundations. It is in fact Greek culture that emerges, both at the level of the subjects and as a subliminal dimension, since the artist considers it the semantic, ideal, and epistemological matrix of the entire Western tradition.

The pictorial artworks are presented as assemblages of images and words, a sign of a present constantly redefined on the archetypes of classicism, eroded yes by time, but simultaneously unshakable, that classicism that remains an indelible system of semantic references on which human hermeneutic capacities are exercised.

The pictorial artworks are also accompanied by sculpture works that, following the well-known Platonic doctrine of anamnesis, are presented as assemblages of wood and stone. The union of these two materials, derived from a metaphor in Plato's Phaedrus, expresses the simple and profound value of memory as a function of knowledge development and the sense of being. The subjects, deliberately blurred at first glance, allow themselves to be uncovered by the attentive visitor, who discovers their learned references to myths and stories foundational to Western culture.
