This is the story of Japanese Craftsmanship Spirits: SHOGAWA Hikimono Kiji (Wood Turnery)

Having close to 70% of the land covered in forests, Japan has traditional wooden crafts flourished in many different areas. One of them, Shogawa Wood Turnery, was born in Toyama Prefecture.

At the end of the 16th century, the Shogawa River, which ran from the coast of Toyama Prefecture through Gifu Prefecture, became an important channel for transporting lumber wood. This also led to the development of driftwood business in this city. Driftwood was stored in a timber yard in the city, which became a major distribution center in Hokuriku, the northwestern region of Mainland Japan. It is said that in the 19th century, craftsmen started the business of lathe-turning wood to make good use of the wood available in abundance.

The use of live sawn lumber highlights the distinct tree rings in each product. These natural wood products gain their charm over the years, as the luster and color tone may change depending on the environment you use them in. A wide range of plain wood or lacquered polished products are available.

O stool by Jasper Morrison
In 2016, Maruni launched the T&O series by British designer Jasper Morrison featuring a beautiful combination of solid wood and carbonated steel. This series became very popular and has been installed in many public spaces around the world due to its endearing #design and functionality.

"O Stool is in 3d machined solid wood and the stool mid and high have painted steel tube footrests. The handle, consisting of an elongated hole machined through the centre of the seat is shaped for maximum comfort when carrying the stool. It is also a familiar typology revitalised with improved comfort and new materials." -Jasper Morrison-
