The Fest Between Representation and Revolt

Opening
Tue, 13 Dec 2022
7 p.m.

THE FEST portrays the art and cultural history of a fest as an unforgettable event, as exuberant and experimental self-invention, as an imperial gesture, as a strategy of revolt, as the history of social media that spans far into the past, as “luxury for all,” and as a medium of exclusion.
Fests reflect changes in society and anticipate them at the same time. In the exhibition, contemporary artworks and projects are shown alongside historical ones. Over 600 objects and artefacts, predominantly from the collection of the MAK as well as from Austrian and international collections, invite visitors to engage with the wide scope of the subject. On display are dresses and costumes, event photographs, champagne glasses, novelty drinking vessels, chandeliers and lamps, and so much more—all within an immersive installation by sculptor Peter Sandbichler, whose opulent exhibition design lends new life to cardboard bicycle boxes.
