Tough First WorldSSP Race At Portimao

Kawasaki Puccetti #racing riders #canoncu and #yarimontella found the shortened 12-lap #worldssp race at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve a challenge in some regards, with Can finishing ninth and Yari 13th.

Both Can and Yari were involved in a large multi-rider leading group for part of the race until they dropped back during what was a particularly intense race, given its reduction from the planned 18 to a final 12 lap duration.

Having hoped for a repeat of his podium performances at the recent #worldssp round in Barcelona-Catalunya, Öncü finished the first race of the #portimao weekend in ninth place, after qualifying 14th on the grid.

Despite this tough race Öncü remained third overall in the championship and even extended his lead over the fourth placed rider to seven points.

Can’s team-mate Montella was tenth in Superpole and finally 13th after two mid-race incidents which prevented him making even greater progress.

Now the #worldssp duo look to the final #portimao race on Sunday 9 October to get back into contention for the top points-scoring places.

Can Öncü, stated: “It was a difficult race today but let’s look positively at it because we took some good points in the championship. We have to improve tomorrow and for sure we will be back - on the podium I hope. Let’s see how we do in the morning warm-up session to improve in the difficult places and then aim for the top three again.”

Yari Montella, stated: “I started well, but then contact with another rider saw me drop back to eighteenth. I got my head down and started to make up places, working hard to close in on the leading group. Unfortunately in the final stages, I made a small mistake that caused me to lose contact with that group and I finished thirteenth. Perhaps we could have done a little better, but we’ll try again tomorrow in Race Two.”

Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) was a non-finisher after experiencing a technical issue and pulling into pitlane. Tom Booth-Amos (Prodina #racing Kawasaki) crashed at Turn 13 and was unable to restart.

Ben Currie (Motozoo #racing by Puccetti Kawasaki) was 22nd today and Jeffrey Buis (Motozoo #racing by Puccetti Kawasaki) 24th.
