Gagosian to Participate in Inaugural Edition of Frieze Seoul

SEOUL, August 29, 2022—Gagosian is pleased to participate in the inaugural edition of Frieze #seoul with a presentation of works by gallery artists.

A highlight of Gagosian's presentation is Vanda Orchid (2022), a new painting by #jonaswood, which represents the flower from petals to roots, its forms flattened against a black ground that accentuates its bold color, pattern, and line. Rudolf Stingel's Untitled (2015) is a detailed photorealistic rendering of a vulture in gray tones overlaid with splattered pigments, the artist's footprint, and a section of patterned carpet—both fusing and interrogating representation and abstraction. Jia Aili's dynamic painting Boccioni in the Wind (2022), titled in homage to Italian Futurist #umbertoboccioni, imagines a turbulent space of tessellated planes occupied by some of the figurative motifs that recur across Jia's oeuvre: a leaning figure, a horse and rider, a skeleton, and an octopus-like creature.

Jenny Saville investigates the possibilities of contemporary figuration with Couples Study (Red Chalk) (2019), in which her subjects recline together, limbs intertwined, while other sketches of the couple are superimposed on the same page. In Untitled (2022), #louisebonnet represents a bodily fragment that is both anatomically ambiguous and highly specific in its portrayal of the visceral tensions of flesh in relation to the geometric block on which it sits. Tetsuya Ishida's Untitled (2000) depicts a young man dressed in car racing gear who grips a steering wheel while seated in a hole in a sidewalk. The disjunction between speed and stasis dramatizes the socioeconomic anxieties of the artist's generation during what has been called Japan's "lost decade."

Mark Grotjahn occupies a realm between systematic structure and gestural spontaneity in the nonrepresentational canvas Untitled (Capri 54.13) (2021), its linear brushstrokes of primary colors defining layered striations. Stanley Whitney paints blocks of saturated color demarcated by bands in Stay Song 111 (2022), creating chromatic harmonies and visual polyrhythms that resonate with the improvisational energy of jazz. Rick Lowe's Untitled #06102022 (2022) presents an abstract cartography that bridges the artist's social practice with his work in the studio. Inspired by overhead views of domino games, the painted and collaged fragments of Lowe's canvas cohere into complex patterns that resemble urban maps.

Representing the breadth of the gallery's program, Gagosian's presentation at Frieze #seoul will include additional works by #georgbaselitz, #ashleybickerton, #christo, #johncurrin, #edmunddewaal, #ursfischer, #helenfrankenthaler, #damienhirst, #thomashouseago, #donaldjudd, #takashimurakami, #albertoehlen, #namjunepaik, #richardprince, #gerhardrichter, #nancyrubins, #edruscha, #richardserra, #spencersweeney, and #marktansey.
