Hero Image Cupra EKS heads to Vallelunga aiming to stretch healthy FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup lead

  • CUPRA EKS aims to reinforce its lead in the 2022 #fiaetcretouringcarworldcup as the leading manufacturer champions
  • CUPRA EKS driver #adrientambay targets a fifth SuperFinal win in a row
  • Team-mates Mattias Ekström, Jordi Gené and #tomblomqvist are fully charged for 100% all-electric action in the awesome #cupra eRacer
  • Autodromo #Vallelunga Piero Taruffi is Italy’s first electromobility hub and smart circuit

The fully charged summer season of all-electric touring car #racing continues apace as the #cupra EKS team head straight from the previous round in Belgium for Round 5 of the 2022 #fiaetcretouringcarworldcup in Italy, which takes place at the #autodromoVallelungapierotaruffi (22-24 July).

The circuit, which is located just north of Rome, held the inaugural ETCR race meeting in 2021 – where #cupra started its title-winning season off by bringing home the manufacturers’ trophy.

Having opened in the 1950s, #Vallelunga might be steeped in history but the Automobile Club d’Italia-owned circuit has moved with the times and is Italy’s first electromobility hub and smart track, with its own permanent charging infrastructure. Uniquely, the #fiaetcretouringcarworldcup will use both the 1.7km Club and 3.2km International track layouts.

CUPRA arrive in Italy aiming to extend its lead in the ETCR series – something it has successfully done at all four rounds this year to establish a healthy 202-point lead at the top of the manufacturers’ table.

The speed, reliability and subtle set-up adjustments have once again made the #cupra e-Racer the all-electric car to catch – coupled of course to the precision, skill and clever use of the Power Up boost facility of the drivers (which gives the car its full 450kW of power for a pre-set period of time) who have all been on brilliant form this year.

In his maiden ETCR season, #adrientambay leads the drivers’ points table. He is the only driver to win all four of his DHL SuperFinal races this season (in France, Hungary, Spain and Belgium) and was crowned King of the Weekend in only his second ETCR race meeting at the Hungaroring.

The lead keeps swapping between Tambay and his #cupra EKS team-mate Mattias Ekström – with the defending ETCR champion heading to #Vallelunga second in the standings and aiming to take the lead by overturning a 21 points deficit.

Tom Blomqvist is having a magnificent first season in ETCR – winning a Quarter-Final, Semi-Final and finishing second in three DHL SuperFinals. He arrives in Italy fifth in the drivers’ table and looking for his first SuperFinal win.

Jordi Gené did take second in the DHL SuperFinal at his home race in Jarama, and the points he has gained at the other race meetings as been instrumental in building the lead #cupra now enjoys in the manufacturers’ standings. Always the team player, Gené will be hoping his luck finally changes at #Vallelunga and the win he so richly deserves comes his way.

DID YOU KNOW?

What lies under the bonnet of the #cupra e-Racer is top secret.

All the cars #racing in the #fiaetcretouringcarworldcup have a one-make drivetrain and identical four electric motors (which delivers 300kW of continuous power and up to 500kW max power at 12,000 rpm) and use the same software – but then it’s down to the skill of the #cupra EKS team’s engineers and mechanics to make the crucial fine-tuning subtle adjustments to the cooling installation, suspension set-up and weight balance (within a strict tolerance measurement).

And as the #cupra EKS drivers will tell you, it’s within these little adjustments that the magic lies – and what makes the #cupra e-Racer a race-winning car.

There is no conventional gearbox, and the driver does not change gear. However, there are what looks like gear-shift paddles near the steering wheel. These are in fact to, amongst other things, alter the traction control settings.

The car is fully 100% electric and does not recharge its batteries during the race. Instead, the cars are recharged between races in the Energy Station recharging hub. Two hydrogen Fuel-Cells produce 160kW at 250-450v to power the charging units, ensuring that only decarbonised electricity is created with water the only by-product produced in the process.
