ABT Cupra XE shows its pace at the Island X Prix double header in Sardinia

The #abtcupraxe team showed its pace at the #islandxprix double header Extreme E race in #sardinia, with both #nasseralattiyah and #juttakleinschmidt setting an impressive pace in the all-electric #cupra Tavascan XE race car.

It was a gruelling format, with two full Extreme E races meetings held on an army training camp at Cape Teulad in Sulcis-Iglesiente in the south-west corner of the Italian Mediterranean island.

There were many incidents as the races played out along the 7-kilometre rough-terrain course – which was fast, narrow, dusty and contained jumps, water splashes and mud holes – although #abtcupraxe avoided the major mechanical problems and rebuilds that affected other teams.

But in the end, it was bad luck that prevented the team from scoring top all-electric off-road #racing points.

Island X Prix 1

ABT #cupra XE needed to win the Crazy Race to qualify for the #islandxprix 1 Final. Al-Attiyah drove first and made a great start to lead the four-car field. As outside temperatures topped 31˚C, Al-Attiyah led by 16 seconds as he handed over to Kleinschmidt in the Switch Zone. The German ace drove an immaculate lap to take the chequered flag, although unfortunately several penalties incurred during the race dropped the team from first position and therefore ended its #islandxprix 1 hopes.

Island X Prix 2

The course was altered slightly to provide more traction and the #abtcupraxe drivers made the most of this opportunity with a good qualifying performance which put them straight into the Semi-Final 2 race. Kleinschmidt made a great start from third position on the grid and took the alternate line, slotting into second place at the merge point. Handing over in the Switch Zone to Al-Attiyah, the Qatari driver pushed hard and closed in on the leader – although a comfortable second-place finish was enough to qualify for the Final. Winning the Grid Play fan vote, Al-Attiyah led the Final, but unfortunately Kleinschmidt had a problem engaging the hardness and the team was disqualified after the race for a safety systems infringement.

The next Extreme E race is the Copper X Prix in Chile on 24-25 September.
