Cupra EKS extends FIA ETCR lead as Zolder SuperFinal win sees Adrien Tambay at top of the drivers’ standings

  • CUPRA EKS wins the manufacturers’ trophy in #zolder and extends its FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup lead to 202 points
  • CUPRA EKS drivers #adrientambay and #tomblomqvist score a #cupra 1-2 in the Pool Fast DHL SuperFinal
  • Tambay takes the lead in the drivers’ standings, 21 points ahead of defending ETCR champion and #cupraeks team-mate Mattias Ekström

CUPRA EKS won the manufacturers’ award at the #2022fiaetcretouringcarworldcup race meeting in #zolder (8-10 July) – with its fourth win in a row extending its lead at the top of the standings to 202 points.

Adrien Tambay was the best placed #cupraeks driver in Belgium, as he led team-mate #tomblomqvist home in another 1-2 DHL SuperFinal finish. Having also won his Pool Fast Semi Final, Tambay finished second in the weekend’s overall standings, with the 89 points gained in Belgium giving him the lead in the ETCR drivers’ championship.

He has overtaken Mattias Ekström in the race for the 2022 drivers’ title – although the defending ETCR champion is just 21 points behind the all-electric #racing newcomer.

Ekström raced hard, but the two-time King of the Weekend was nudged wide and through a chicane in the Pool Furious DHL SuperFinal. He did well to keep his position on track and came home third to maintain his title challenge.

Tom Blomqvist won his Pool Fast Quarter Final race, finished second in his Semi Final and pushed Tambay all the way in the DHL SuperFinal. With no team orders, he drove a fast and fair race and celebrated a convincing #cupra 1-2 result, as the pair of #cupra eRacers took the chequered flag in victory formation. Blomqvist is fifth in the drivers’ standings.

Jordi Gené raced hard in Pool Furious, with second in his Semi Final his best race result of the weekend. He deserved more than sixth after a hard-fought SuperFinal and comes away from #zolder ninth in the drivers’ standings.

Xavi Serra, #cupra #racing Head of Technical Development:

“Zolder is a very technical circuit and, as we anticipated, it presented us with many engineering challenges. With little grip and heavy demands on braking, we worked hard to find a good rhythm – and thanks to the expertise of the engineers and mechanics we improved the car throughout the weekend, which you can see in the results of the Semi-Finals and SuperFinals. I must thank the team for its great work this weekend.”

Round 5 of the FIA E TCR eTouring Car World Cup is the Race IT at the Autodromo Vallelunga in Italy on 22-24 July.
