Odendaal finishes Race 1 8th due to a penalty, best result of the season for Sebestyen

Race Saturday for the Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team, who experienced an emotional and exciting day in Barcelona. After a dry Superpole in fact the bad weather played a fundamental role in the development of Race 1, which #stevenodendaal and #petersebestyen finished in P8 and P9 respectively.

Day 2 on Catalan soil opened with the Superpole, held as mentioned on a dry track. Odendaal pushed as hard as he could to get a good position on the starting grid, reaching sixth place thanks to a time of 1'45"108. Sebestyen's session was more complicated and he was forced to settle for 15th.

Exactly three hours after the end of the Superpole, the lights went out for Race 1, which started in dry conditions but saw the rain appear during the first lap. Odendaal got off to a good start and was already in third place at the end of the first lap. On the next lap, Odendaal came back in to mount wet weather tyres, but the "excessive" speed of the pit stop led the race direction to give the South African rider a penalty of 25.845 seconds on his final race time, for not respecting the pit intervention time.

Odendaal returned to the track after the pit stop and immediately occupied third position, #racing intelligently and carefully on a tarmac that was only partially wet, passing the chequered flag in fourth position but finishing eighth due to the penalty. With the points gained today Odendaal rises to 248, making up ground on championship leader Aegerter.

Sebestyen got off to a good start, coming into the pits for a tyre change on lap 2, returning to the track in P13, the Hungarian began to make up positions thanks to his speed, crossing the line in P11, but earned P9 due to penalties imposed on some riders. The Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team will be back on track tomorrow, when Warm Up (9.25) and Race 2 (12.30) will be staged. The race (in Italy) will be visible on Sky Sport Action, channel 206 of Sky.

Steven Odendaal: "Today fate was not on our side. We had a competitive bike for the dry, but with the arrival of the wet weather everything became complicated, because we didn't have any reference points. We gave our best but unfortunately a penalty affected our result heavily. I hope it will be dry tomorrow, to try to achieve the maximum in terms of points".

Peter Sebestyen: "I'm happy with the result but I wanted more because in mixed conditions I was often fast. My times were good in the wet but as the track dried out I struggled. The team did a great job and now we have a lot of data to analyse ahead of tomorrow, to see if there is a chance to improve".

Fabio Evangelista (Team Principal): "It was a difficult race, as it often happens when it rains after the start. Steven had great confidence in the dry, so he could have aimed for the podium, but then everything got complicated: we are very sorry and bitter for the penalty, although I do not agree with the rule at all. Peter did well, as he also had to struggle with the asphalt conditions, taking a positive ninth position. For tomorrow the goal is to get as many points as possible".
