“…sculpture should have the chance to not fulfill expectations.” - #nairybaghramian, 2020
Marian Goodman Projects is pleased to present a selection of recent works from Nairy Baghramian’s Side Leaps series in its London space. This is the first time that this body of work has been exhibited in the UK, with several drawings never having been seen previously.
In conjunction with her sculptures and installations, Baghramian has throughout her career produced significant sketches, drawings, and maquettes, known as Side Leaps. While conceptually underpinning her large-scale sculptural works, and compared by the artist to her studio tools, these sketches, drawings and maquettes are periphery studies for sculptures that will never exist. In Baghramian's words, the Side Leaps ‘have not been allowed to become sculpture’. As such, they provide intimate and invaluable insight into the artist’s working practice, becoming as consequential as the realised sculpture.
These works are the subject of a new book published by the gallery, featuring extensive illustrations and an essay on the artist’s work by art historian and curator, Miwon Kwon, as well as a conversation between Baghramian, Marian Goodman, and Philipp Kaiser.
