Facts & Figures from Hungary: The Hungarian Grand Prix brought the first half of the Formula One season to a close, and the teams and drivers are now off on their summer break. But before they could start recovering from their exertions and recharging their mental batteries, they had to contend with an action-packed Grand Prix at the Hungaroring on the outskirts of #budapest, characterised by a wet-weather build-up, a red flag and a determined charge through the field by Lewis. The team’s starting position could hardly have been better after qualifying, with Lewis and Valtteri in a front row lockout. For Lewis, it was a 75th pole position as a Mercedes-Benz driver, while for the team, it was the 214th pole in the premier class of motor #racing, a tally that takes the brand with the three-pointed star past Renault and into second place on the all-time manufacturers’ leaderboard. The race got off to a disastrous start for Valtteri, who was forced to retire after a mass pile-up on the rain-soaked track. Lewis was then dropped to the back of the field after the restart because, unlike all of the other drivers left in the race, he did not pit immediately for a tyre change. Lewis was obliged to mount a furious charge from 14th place, in the course of which he pulled off several bold overtaking moves. He eventually crossed the finish line in third place after a thrilling final lap, but a subsequent disqualification for Sebastian Vettel bumped him up to second. The 2021 #f1 season resumes after the summer break on the weekend of 27 ‑ 29 August with the Belgian Grand Prix on the #spafrancorchamps rollercoaster in the Ardennes Forest.

One-two finish for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport in class and vital championship points in the Spa 24 Hours: For the second year in a row, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport has won the Silver Cup classification in the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa. The number 90 Mercedes-AMG GT3 fielded by Madpanda Motorsport led the class for almost the entire duration of the race. After 551 intense laps on the Circuit de #spafrancorchamps, Rik Breukers NED), Ezequiel Perez Companc (ARG), Patrick Kujala (FIN) and Ricardo Sanchez (MEX) finished eleventh overall to secure victory in the fiercely contested Silver Cup. Toksport WRT’s Marvin Dienst (GER), Axcil Jefferies (ZIM), Paul Petit (FRA) and Oscar Tunjo (COL) finished 13th overall and second in class to complete the one-two. The number 7 car had initially started the endurance classic from the pit lane, but steadily worked its way through to the front as the race progressed. Driving the final stint, Dienst moved up to second place in class, a position which he then defended all the way to the finish line as heavy rain began to set in.

The best-placed Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the general classification was the number 89 AKKA ASP driven by Lucas Auer (AUT), Timur Boguslavskiy (RUS) and Felipe Fraga (BRA) which finished tenth. The high-performance Mercedes-AMGs were not blessed with the best of luck in the 73rd running of this endurance classic. The number 4 and 88 cars of Mercedes-AMG teams HRT and AKKA ASP respectively had to retire early from the race after sustaining damage. Nonetheless, the pole position booked by Raffaele Marciello (ITA) and solid intermediate positions at the six-hour mark and the halfway point earned AKKA ASP a worthwhile points haul towards the overall standings in the GT World Challenge Europe. Marciello goes into the next rounds of the competition on 28 and 29 August at Brands Hatch in the UK occupying second place in the drivers’ standings.

Podium successes in the #gt4 European Series: The #gt4 European Series staged its seventh and eighth races of the season in the framework of the 24-hour endurance classic. AKKA ASP claimed a fourth overall podium of the current campaign, courtesy of the number 88 car.  Timothé Buret and Paul Evrard (both FRA) improved from fourth on the grid to second place in the first of the two one-hour races. The number 34 Mercedes-AMG #gt4 of Selleslagh #racing Team driven by Luca Bosco (ITA) and Maxime Soulet (BEL) took the runner-up spot twice in the Pro-Am class.
