Chapal x Pitti Uomo 2021

Maison artisanale d’exception depuis 1832

A traditional French manufacture specialized in luxury leather garment and accessories since 1832.

In 1832 in the small village of Crocq, Leonard #chapal started a leather tanning and fur making company named after his family name, #chapal. By using processes from the silk industry and applying it on rabbit fur, it quickly became famous in the whole country. Soon, Leonard and then his son Emile opened workshops in Montreuil, Lagny-sur-Marne and even Brooklyn as well as a small boutique in rue de La Roquette in Paris.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, #chapal started to craft leather jackets and overalls for aircraft pilots, including the iconic 1914 jacket that is still made in the Crocq workshop nowadays. Up to 3,000 craftsmen were working in the workshops in those days.

In 1934, #chapal secures a very innovative process to make waterproof leathers, which will lead the company supplying leathers for the US Air Force until after World War II. Until the 80s, #chapal continued to create leather and fur garments for brands, including prestigious names like Christian Dior.

The late 80s were difficult times for French workshops with many brands turning to lower labour-cost countries. While most of them shut down, Jean-François Bardinon, sixth generation from the #chapal family, decided to transform the company from a supplier to a high-end brand and created the first collection of jackets and coats inspired from the 150 years old archives.

Intended as links between the past and today, #chapal creations are all handcrafted in the historic workshop of Crocq using its in-house tanned leathers.
