Rope Chair makes its public debut at the new Bourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection in Paris

The #boursedecommerce — Pinault Collection has opened its doors in the heart of Paris, the city's first museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art from a private collection. The building, a historic landmark and erstwhile commodities exchange, was renovated and transformed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando along with Lucie Niney and Thibault Marco from the NeM Agency, and Pierre-Antoine Gatier', architect in chief of the Historical Monuments. Longstanding #artek collaborators Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were enlisted to #design the building’s urban surroundings and furnishings, which include the new Rope Chair for #artek.

A new museum in the heart of Paris

The #boursedecommerce — Pinault Collection offers a glimpse into the contemporary art collection assembled by Francois Pinault over the past fifty years, including paintings, sculptures, videos, photographs, sound pieces, installations, and performances by almost 3 80 artists. Located at the very centre of the city, the #boursedecommerce incarnates four centuries of architectural and technical innovation. The column, built in the 1 d'* century for Catherine de’ Medici, is a Parisian icon, the first free-standing column to go up in the French capital. The impressive circular building to which it connects was built nearly 200 years later as  a grain exchange, then covered in 18 1 2 by a spectacular metal and glass cupola. In 18 89, the building was refitted to become the #boursedecommerce — or commodities exchange — then went on to house the Paris Chamber of Commerce from 1949 until 2016.

After a three year restoration and transformation executed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando (TAAA — Tadao Ando Architect & Associates), the NeM Agency/ Niney et Marco Architectes, Pierre-Antoine Gatier’s agency, and Setec Botiment, the Bourse de Commerce has been reimagined as a site for dialogue — between architecture and its context, between heritage and contemporary creation, between past and present, between collection and visitor. After a restoration that conserved the beauty of the original building, Ando and NeM turned towards building something new, erecting an enormous concrete cylinder inside the rotunda. Nested inside the historic structure like a Russian doll, the cylinder serves as a living dialogue between old and new.

Longstanding #artek collaborators Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were invited to conceive the building’s urban surroundings and furnishings. In their own words:

The new #boursedecommerce is a play o/ contrasts, leaps between eras, or between he most established i!ems [...) such as he mouldings, decors, paving and woodwork  from he  I 9!h century — and more timeless, abs!rac! elements — such as s!one, concrete, glass, light, circles, abstraction... It was vital not to “decorate” these spaces, or disturb his union of contrasts, |ust !o accompany hem.
