Nissan e.dams set to go racing on iconic Monaco street circuit
Team to debut new Nissan Gen2 Formula E powertrain
YOKOHAMA, Japan – Nissan e.dams is back at the iconic Monaco street circuit this weekend for round seven of the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The glamourous principality is a happy hunting ground for the team, with both cars in the top five and driver Oliver Rowland on the podium last time out in 2019.
Team driver Sebastien Buemi is the most successful Formula E racer around Monte Carlo having won the biennial Monaco E-Prix twice. For this season, the fourth running of the event, the revised street circuit layout will be familiar to motorsport fans everywhere, and as tight and challenging as ever. The race will take place on May 8.
The 19-turn, 3.32km track layout will see the all-electric race cars climb up the hill after the first turn at Sainte Devote and then complete a new section for Formula E, including famous corners around Casino Square, Mirabeau, the Grand Hotel Hairpin and Portier.
Nissan has developed a new Formula E powertrain featuring upgraded hardware and software, with the objective to improve the performance of its Gen2 Formula E race car.
"The track layout is new this year, but our previous success here brings confidence to the team," said Tommaso Volpe, Nissan's global motorsports director. "Nissan developed a new Gen2 powertrain that will race for the first time around this exciting track, so we are focused to extract the maximum performance. This new racing powertrain is the result of an ever-closer collaboration between our road car business and our Formula E project."
Nissan races in this world championship to bring the excitement and fun of zero-emission electric vehicles to a global audience. As part of its goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations and the life cycle of its products by 2050, Nissan intends to electrify all-new Nissan vehicle offerings by the early 2030s in key markets. Nissan aims to bring its expertise in transferring knowledge and technology between the racetrack and road for better electric vehicles for customers.
In the days leading up to the 2021 Monaco E-Prix, Nissan will be exhibiting its rich history and bright future in sustainable mobility at the EVER Monaco event. At the Nissan stand visitors can enjoy a 10th anniversary celebration of the pioneering Nissan LEAF, featuring the launch model of the world's first mass market EV from 2010, as well as the latest version of the long-range, high-output 2021 LEAF e+. Also on display will be Nissan's next generation EV, the all-new Ariya crossover.
"Both our drivers showed speed, consistency and determination in Valencia in extremely challenging, ever-changing track conditions," said Olivier Driot, co-team principal of Nissan e.dams. "We are proud of the commitment they showed the team, but now we have a new challenge as we introduce our latest Gen2 powertrain. Seb and Oli will need to rely on their skill and experience of success at previous Monaco E-Prix events to extract the maximum from the new Nissan Gen2 powertrain."
Nissan e.dams racing with Shell E-Fluids
Nissan e.dams, now in its third season in partnership with Shell, is pleased to announce the introduction of a bespoke Shell e-transmission fluid that will be used in the new Gen2 powertrain, debuting this weekend in Monaco. The Shell E-Fluid has been tested and refined in close collaboration with Nissan's powertrain R&D team to analyze and showcase the benefits that specifically designed EV transmission fluids can play within a Formula E powertrain, to deliver maximum performance and efficiency to the team.

"I love Monaco. I've won here twice before in the three previous Formula E races, but I will take nothing for granted as we have a new track layout and a new Nissan Gen2 powertrain. There is a great deal for the team to focus on this weekend and this is an exciting challenge. The results did not go my way in Valencia, but it felt like luck was not on my side as I had the pace to get into Super Pole and we were fast in all track conditions. I'm looking forward to showing what we can do around the streets of Monaco."

"As a team we had to battle hard in Valencia, and I am proud that we managed to take 12 championship points from what were two very challenging races. The wet-to-dry track conditions in Valencia made the racing extremely unpredictable but I am happy to have run at the front for both races in such a talented field of drivers. I got a podium in Monaco in 2019, and any driver would love to win here. I can't wait to go racing with our new Nissan Formula E powertrain."
