THE FORNASETTI TRUMEAU

1950 – 2021. The history of an icon

The word “trumeau” is a classic example of an Italianised Gallicism, whose meaning is not the same as that of the original term. Well aware of his lexical reshaping, #pierofornasetti chose the word to define this object that lies somewhere between a sideboard, a bar unit and a folding desk. Featuring a facade and doors, its structure evokes the world of architecture and that, together with its interiors, makes it ideally suited to the task of highlighting the ambiguity between real and imaginary spaces.

The history of the #fornasetti trumeau has its roots at the start of the Fifties, when #gioponti was commissioned to create a sole prototype, in briarwood, and #pierofornasetti decorated it with views of Venice: this piece is considered the godfather of the trumeau.

Its most famous form and decoration - the one known as “Architettura” - dates back to 1951 and can today be found in the permanent collections of the world’s most important museums of #design and decorative arts, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Originally designed by #gioponti, it was then modified by #fornasetti, who chose to give it a squarer, more linear look, eliminating those elements that might have recalled a style typical of the Fifties.

Fornasetti was fascinated by the correlation between architectural buildings and furniture: both featuring facades and doors that reveal inner spaces. The ornament at the base depictes Genoa’s Palazzo di Alessi (now the University), whereas the flap reveales, both on the inside and the outside, the Cour d’Honneur at the Brera Academy.

The trumeau series has been repeatedly enriched with new pieces over the years: from the “Libri”, “Panoplie”, “Malachite” and “Gran Coromandel” models to more recent creations with more unusual features. Examples include the trumeau “Fun fan” from 2011, conceived by Barnaba #fornasetti.

Recognised as a historic icon of Italian #design, the #fornasetti trumeau is not just a piece of furniture, it is a portal to the imagination in which each door opens worlds of fantasy and surprising perspectives.
