SILVER TREASURES - Piedmontese Silver in the Palazzo Madama Collection

SILVER TREASURES

Piedmontese Silver in the Palazzo Madama Collection

As part of the Regione Piemonte’s “L’essenziale è Barocco” project, Palazzo Madama presents the exhibition Silver Treasures, in the Sala Atelier from 16 Aprile to 19 October 2020.

The exhibition, which is curated by Clelia Arnaldi di Balme, shows a selection of silver works from the Palazzo Madama collection, retracing the history of silverware in Piedmont from the early eighteenth century to the late nineteenth.

It starts by illustrating the metalworking techniques used for this ductile, malleable material, and the assay techniques set in place by the Court of Savoy to guarantee the value and quality of the items being sold.

The works on display give the visitor an overview of the table silverware, furnishing items and religious objects.

In addition to these artefacts, the display also includes grandiose drawings by Giovanni Battista Boucheron, which are accompanied by portraits of the silversmiths in his family.

The central showcase contains a work that has been restored and is on show to the public for the first time: the silver mace commissioned from Carlo Balbino by the City of Turin after the Restoration, towards the second decade of the nineteenth century. This mace was carried by the municipal usher on official occasions.

The exhibition ends with a selection of coins minted in the Savoy duchy and reign from sixteenth to nineteenth century, and with a collection of “Dorini” – hair ornaments and silver filigree hair pins, typically worn in the second half of the nineteenth century by Piedmontese ladies, who attached them to their plaits and hair on festive occasions.

The museum collections are flanked by some works from two private collections: high quality silver tableware and a selection of walking sticks with a silver pommel.
