HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEM!


A loop which is floating in the air”.Space inside the furniture, furniture inside the space”.  It was described like that the LEM stool in year 2000, during the presentation at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Shin & Tomoko Azumi, creators with #lapalma of a stool that has become over time a symbol of the style and know-how of the Venetian company.

Today LEM turns twenty. Celebrating with over a million stools sold worldwide, of this symbol of contemporary #design. It does this by dressing in six new colors that reinvent the myth of a success that has changed the identity of every environment, from the office to the home, to high-class restaurants.

History of an icon product

The story of LEM began in 1996, when two young Japanese designers based in London presented a small handmade brochure to Dario and Romano Marcato, founders of #lapalma, at the IMM fair in Cologne. A few pencil strokes, just enough to imagine the beauty and uniqueness of a sign that would become an icon. Another meeting in 1999, with new designs and a year of testing to develop the technology capable of achieving the impossible: the double curve of the metal tubular section that defines the frame of the stool, combining in a continuous line of the seat and footrest.

The absolute innovation, this is how #lapalma entered the new millennium: LEM was born. At Salone del Mobile in Milan its light silhouette, the uniqueness of its character combined with extraordinary comfort, the amazing synthesis between Japanese culture and Italian technology, receive international acclaim. A few months later, LEM conquers the Conran Shop window. The first step towards a bright future.

2000-2020. Twenty years of worldwide success

The sign of LEM, disruptive in thought and continuous in form, summarizes the character and uniqueness of the new millennium and declares a success that sees it protagonist on many occasions.

From when, a few years after its debut, on September 19, 2007 during a press conference in Berlin, Steve Jobs announces Apple's exclusive partner for distribution in Germany, sitting on a LEM.

In 2008, the stool enters the permanent collection of Victoria & Albert Museum.

In 2014 is selected by Elle Decor Italy among the iconic pieces that have marked the history since the 1950s of Italian and international #design for the project BE ORIGINAL.

In 2017 for the exhibition A decade of evolution in design, organized by IFDM/Il Foglio del Mobile, two young artists of the Brera academy, Arianna De Stefani and Gabriele Farina, present giant version of LEM (1.90mts height) with the work called Waist Up.

Among the many awards granted to LEM, it is worth mentioning: FX International #interiordesign Award – London (2000), Good #design Award – Tokyo (2000), Restaurant and Bar #design Award – London (2009), Interior Innovation Award Cologne (2010).

The casual and timeless elegance has been the main feature of important projects worldwide including Münich Bmw Museum, Schipol Airport (NL), the Library of Birmingham and Google HQ in Japan.

Happy Birthday LEM!

This year LEM is twenty years old. Twenty years that revolutionized the history of #lapalma and changed the history of #design. For this special occasion, the company dresses LEM in new colors. No longer just black and white, the absolutes with which the stool was presented in 2000, but six new color tones refined and original: verde oliva, caffè, mattone, celeste, tortora and perla. Six new releases, featured on a collection without time.

Making a single piece with only one weld on the frame seemed an impossible challenge.” explains Romano Marcato, founder and owner of #lapalma with his brother Dario. “We worked hard to find the bending parameters, the millimeter precision that gives rise to the absolute simplicity of LEM.”

Today it takes fifty seconds to shape the continuous and acrobatic line that characterizes it, which defines its uniqueness, despite the many attempts to imitate it.

Perhaps the price to pay when creating a symbol of contemporaneity.
