The effects of the current pandemic allow us to take a pause and reflect on the increasingly important epoch: Resource Hungry. El Último Grito comments life is transitional, now more than ever.
Their questions are ones that today everyone has to address. How can we scale back our environmental impact after COVID-19? What would happen if we change the fixed parameters museums currently work in? How can technology give us the ability to adapt?
Rosario Hurtado of HEAD, Geneva University of Art and Design & Roberto Feo Goldsmiths, University of London are duo El Último Grito, a mix of designers, academics and artists by accident. Together they spoke at the 2020 Summit about concepts of time, construction and destruction and how the digital and real world collide. Their interest in systems and designs created, forge an alternative awareness in their practice on resources and how the lack of resources makes one aware of the use of resources.
A collaboration with El Último Grito and the #verbierartsummit resulted in an original zine entitled They Painted the Mountains White. A visual and written story which explores the continuity of time and space under the 2020 Summit theme "Resource Hungry".
The zine asks towards the future: "What if there were no mountains or snow?" Inspiration for the title occurred from a project in Peru in 2010 where a group of inventors physically painted a mountain white to repel the sun as an experiment in passing solar energy into space.
