The new Holocaust monument LEVENSLICHT by Daan Roosegaarde in Rotterdam

LEVENSLICHT

The new Holocaust monument LEVENSLICHT with Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei remembers the 104.000 Holocaust victims with 104.000 luminescent stones and encourages to interact in municipalities all over the Netherlands. Opening: 16 January 2020.

In the coming year, it will be 75 years ago that the international symbol of the Holocaust, concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz, was liberated. Artist #daanroosegaarde is asked to create a special national work of art for this occasion.

The artwork LEVENSLICHT (Life of Light) makes #people aware of the consequences that the Holocaust has had in many Dutch municipalities. LEVENSLICHT is not a traditional static monument in which #people are purely observers.

Daan Roosegaarde: “It is an honour to be asked for this project, and to make a public work of art about the Holocaust. This monument is going to ask for participation, you are part of the story. Light is life, light is hope: LEVENSLICHT."

Gerdi Verbeet, chairman of the National Committee 4 en 5 May: “This work of art, which can be seen in as many Dutch municipalities as affected by the Holocaust, makes the emptiness and lack of this large group tangible in those municipalities compatriots who were murdered during the war, purely and simply for who they were."

In the dark winter months, the light confronts the emptiness that has remained. The work thus provides a place for contemplation and interaction. LEVENSLICHT also inspires the current generation to remember the Holocaust and link it to the broader importance of freedom. For more details about the #design watch De Wereld Draait Door TV interview.

The artwork with 104.000 luminescent stones will be exhibited on 16 January in #rotterdam, and then travel to the municipalities with a Holocaust history in the Netherlands.

Opening 16 January 2020 in #rotterdam, the Netherlands.
