Hockenheim cheers for Mick Schumacher

The fans who flock to race tracks come for excitement and emotion and there was a great example of that today in #hockenheim, when #mickschumacher put on a great show for the enthusiastic crowd. The son of Michael, the great champion got behind the wheel of the #ferrari F2004 that his father drove to win the German Grand Prix 15 years ago, to do a few laps of the track immediately after the this morning’s third free practice session. That victory saw Michael get ever closer to taking his seventh world title, which he actually did at the Belgian GP.

Special helmet. Mick, who is a student of the #ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) is currently #racing in Formula 2 with the Prema team. Today he wore a special helmet with a livery that was half his own and half featuring the dominant red colour favoured by his father as from the 2000 season.

Emotional. “It was simply fantastic being able to get behind the wheel of this car,” said Mick, once he’d stepped out of the cockpit. “While I was waiting in pit lane to go out on track, the minutes seemed like hours. But once I was on the circuit, the minutes went by like seconds. I want to thank #ferrari and Formula 1 for having given me this opportunity, which was a dream and an honour for me.” He then recalled moments from his childhood. “I remember watching my father on television, winning many races at the wheel of this iconic car and I was impressed by the power and noise of the V10 engine. I could see the fans cheering in the grandstands, but I couldn’t hear them because their sound was drowned out by the roar of the car. There wasn’t a single moment today when I didn’t have a huge smile on my face. If it had been up to me, I wouldn’t have ever come back to the pits.”

Tomorrow. Mick will be back on track before the Drivers’ Parade for another run of a few laps in the F2004, one of the most successful #ferrari race cars ever, which won 15 of the 18 races in which it took part.
