"Leonardo da Vinci's Hair"

The unique relic will be exposed for the first time in the Museum Ideale in Vinci from May 2, 2019 during the exhibition "Leonardo Vive"
According to scholars, "this exceptional biological find may help in sourcing the DNA of the genius by allowing comparison with the genetic material of Da Vinci’s living descendants”

A press meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on May 2 in the Biblioteca Leonardiana in Vinci

Vinci (Firenze), April 29, 2019 – «We have recovered a lock of hair historically called "Les Cheveux de #leonardodavinci," along with another relic. This extraordinary find will allow us to proceed in the quest to isolate Da Vinci's DNA. »

The announcement has been made by Alessandro Vezzosi, director of the #museoideale in Vinci, and historian Agnese Sabato, president of the association #leonardodavinci Heritage. Vezzosi and Sabato, who are also the curators of the exhibition “Leonardo Vive” (Leonardo Lives), identified in 2016 a direct and uninterrupted line running from Leonardo's half-brother Domenico to living male descendants.

Vezzosi and Sabato will detail their findings at a press meeting on May 2, 2019 at 11:00 in the Biblioteca Leonardiana in Vinci (via La Pira 1). Giuseppe Torchia, mayor of Vinci, and SimonPietro Felice, general director of the #leonardodavinci Spa, will also attend the meeting.

May 2nd is a symbolic date to make such announcement. On the day of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death, the opening in Vinci of the exhibition "Leonardo Lives" also marks the reopening of the "Museo Ideale Leonardo Da Vinci" and the opening of the new "Museo Leonardo e il Rinascimento del vino".

«This historical relic - a lock of hair - has long remained hidden in an American collection. It will now be exposed for the first time, along with documents attesting its ancient French provenance,” said Alessandro Vezzosi.

«This relic is what we needed to make our historical research even more solid from a scientific point of view,» said Agnese Sabato. «We are planning to carry out DNA analysis on the relic and compare it to Leonardo’s living descendants as well as to bones found in Da Vinci burials that we have identified in the past years. The investigation into the DNA of the genius might be able to proceed, also in relation to Leonardo's presumed remains in the tomb in Amboise, France. »

New discoveries on the naked Mona Lisa

Maurizio Seracini from Editech will also attend the press meeting. «According to our scientific investigation, the painting of the #museoideale features holes which correspond exactly to those in the cartoon held at the Conde Museum in Chantilly. This charcoal preparatory work for a painting of a semi-nude woman has now been attributed to Leonardo and his atelier workshop. »

Realized with the collaboration of the Municipality of Vinci, sponsored by the National Committee for the Celebrations of the 500th anniversary and the Region of Tuscany, the exhibition “Leonardo Vive” also features artworks from national museums and State Archives documents never exhibited before.

Mayor Giuseppe Torchia said: «This exhibition is significant as it focuses on several rediscoveries about Leonardo, his workshop and his family, not to mention the innovative search for his DNA. It also shows Da Vinci's links with his homeland and the agriculture, and Leonardo’s relevance in international contemporary art. The show appropriately integrates the exhibition “Leonardo a Vinci. Alle origini del Genio” (Leonardo in Vinci. Back to the origins of the genius) which has already been inaugurated in the "Museo Leonardiano" on April 15. I would also like to point out the importance of the urban recovery of the "Museo Ideale Leonardo Da Vinci" in the historical center. This, together with the new "Museo Leonardo e il Rinascimento del vino", adds to the museum itinerary and Vinci’s cultural offer. »
