“Confiding is nature, welcoming confidences as they are made is culture.”

- J.W. Goethe -

The Wishing Tree is a collective installation inaugurated on the 9th april at 18.30 in San Barnaba’s cloisters during the 2019 edition of the Milano #design Week.

The installation was born from the collaboration of the restaurant “Il Chiostro di Andrea”, led by chef Andrea Alfieri, with #design companies Curiousa & Curiousa with outdoor lighting, Pink Pampas with its furnishing accessories and Vitra. that participates with the gift cards designed for the company by Alexander Girard and Charles and Ray Eames.

The great laurel (bay-tree) inside the Statue’s Cloister in Via San Barnaba 48 is the project’s real protagonist. It will be dressed with the thoughts of artists, designers and the cloister’s guests, on the themes of peace and hospitality. This is in harmony with the path that, from the end of the 19th century, moved the activities of the Humanitarian Society within this space of the 15th century, dedicating itself to the citizen’s intellectual and moral elevation with their intense social and cultural activities.

Wishes linked to trees originate from Chinese culture, specifically from the start of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) and from the Japanese one, during the Tabata festivity tanzaku - handwritten tickets – are hung from bamboo for a whole day. In both traditions the wish comes true the moment it’s tied to the tree.

For the whole week, the laurel lends itself in becoming the #design people’s confidant, who will participate with their own thoughts, desires and wishes in the collective installation, presented during the closing cocktail party on April 14th from 6.30pm

Everyone’s invited: make a wish!

The project is curated by Francesca Ballini and Valentina Manfredi
