Rome, February 7, 2019.The collaboration begun in 2011 between #maxxi and #alcantara is renewed for 2019. After creating 6 collective shows involving more than 30amongdesigners and national and international studios, the #alcantara - #maxxi project became a monograph last year withStudio Visit.
Studio Visit, now in its second edition,each yearinvites an internationallyrenowneddesigner to conceptualise,within the National Museum of XXIthCentury Arts,a space that gives the artist’s personal interpretation of the work of one of the masters of the permanent collection. One single common denominator for the most diverse projects: Alcantara®, malleable material ready to give form to the most challenging visions.
In 2018, Nanda Vigo with Arch-Arcology paid homage to visionary architect Paolo Soleri. This year, the international #design studioFormafantasmawas chosen, which, after consulting the #maxxi Architecture archives, has decided to address the genius of Pier Luigi Nerviby featuring the project “Nervi in the making” curated by Domitilla Dardi, #design curator at #maxxi.
Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Formafantasma) approached the archive of the indisputable masterin the designofferro-cemento (ferrocement)toget an insight intohis work on the material.
The dual path of study, which on one hand brought the two designers to concentrate on concrete, and on the other hand to approach a material apparently quite different like #alcantara, has, in reality, highlighted peculiar similarities.
The intrinsic characteristics of concrete- versatile, functional, ideal for many applications and interpretations, able todialogue withother materials -of which Nervi pioneered after World War II and which was the object of his unparalleled experimentations, happen to bealso thedistinctivequalities of Alcantara®, a material that, from the moment of its invention, set itself up as the “medium” to #design another future, our present-day contemporary era.
“Structure – the designers explain – is the key word and the most important common element between the two materials. With his extensive research, involving extensive trials, tests and calculations, Nervi demonstrated the extraordinary structures that could be achieved with concrete. It is thanks to his farsighted work that Italy was built over the last sixty years. We approached #alcantara with a similar spirit and studied its wide-ranging application potentials. But our main focus was on what makes it a sui generis material, governed by a sort of artificial intelligence that makes it incredibly versatile.”
The result is an installation that recreates ascenario,which isbothaphysical and mentalspace,with a pattern similar to Chinese boxes, where the underlying theme is the significance of a given material in the work of a designer.
WithFormafantasma.Nervi in the makingrenews the association between the first Italian institution dedicated to contemporary creativity and the company, known all over the world for its unique technology, that has made a constant dialogue between creative vanguards an essential point of its mission.
A common pathway of research and experimentation that sees #maxxi and #alcantara together again on the road of cultural innovation.
