Phillip Island – Australia – Supersport world championship Crashes for De Rosa and Fuligni in the first 2019 WorldSSP race

The first round of the Supersport world championship has come to an end for MV Agusta Reparto Corse at the Phillip Island track in Australia. During yesterday’s practice and Superpole, riders #raffaelederosa and #federicofuligni worked with their technicians to adapt the set-up of their #mvagustaf3675 bikes to the Australian track. In Superpole De Rosa scored fourth place, just ahead of his team-mate Fuligni, which meant that both riders started from the second row of grid for today’s race. Due to a tyre consumption issue, the race was shortened, from 18 to 16 laps, and a mandatory tyre change, to be carried out between laps six and ten, was introduced.

De Rosa got away well and was lying fifth through the opening laps. Unfortunately, on lap three, Raffaele suffered a crash. Able to continue the race, the Italian rider crossed the line, albeit it only in eighteenth position. Fuligni did not make a good start but was making up lost ground following a contact with another rider when he too went down, on lap seven, and was unable to continue.

The next round of the Supersport world championship is set to take place over the weekend of 15-17 March at the Buriram track in Thailand.

Raffaele De Rosa: “I’m really disappointed about the crash because we were sorted and I’m sure I could have fought for the win. I can’t explain the crash and want to check the data with the team, to understand the reason. I’m sorry because the team worked so hard and deserved a better result. The positive is that we’ve proved competitive and so can look ahead with confidence, from the very next round in Thailand”.

Federico Fuligni: “Unfortunately I suffered an easy crash at the hairpin, the slowest point on the track, on the very lap in which I was planning to come in for the tyre change. I didn’t make a good start and then came into contact with another rider early on, risking a crash. I got stressed and lost some positions and then crashed. I’m really sorry because I could have run a good race. I’ll try to make up for it at Buriram.”

Race 1: 1) Krummenacher (Yamaha) – 2) Cluzel (Yamaha) – 3 Caricasulo (Yamaha) – Barbera (Yamaha) – 5) Gradinger (Yamaha) – 6) Okubo (Kawasaki) ......... 18) De Rosa (MV Agusta) – ret) Fuligni (MV Agusta)
