Pirelli head to Qatar as Event Main Sponsor for the last round of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship

The Pirelli Qatar Round will decide the World Supersport 600 Championship and will provide Pirelli with further information on the use of bigger tyres in the premier class

Doha (Qatar), 22 October 2018 - Pirelli is ready to face the last round of the 2018 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship season, which takes place in Qatar from next Thursday until Saturday 27th October. The races will take place on Friday and Saturday.

The riders of the WorldSBK and WorldSSP600 classes will take to the track at the Losail International Circuit in Doha, with the spotlight on the 600 category. The only class which has not yet awarded the world title sees French rider Jules Cluzel go against the German rider Sandro Cortese, both riding Yamaha YZF-R6 machines.

Pirelli will be the Event Main Sponsor of the last round of the FIM Superbike World Championship, which will therefore be called the Pirelli Qatar Round. After the absence in Argentina, Pirelli brings again the bigger size tyres for both the front and rear, which will be joined by other solutions in standard size.

The Losail International Circuit was inaugurated in 2004 and is one of the few circuits in the world that offers the possibility of competing at night thanks to a perfect lighting system. The track is 5380 metres long, including the finishing straight which measures 1068 meters, 6 corners on the left and 10 on the right. The track has a width of 12 metres and, apart from the main straight, the rest of the track is a mix of fast and medium corners, including two fast left. The rider starting from pole position will line up on the right side of the grid.

The track is mostly surrounded by artificial vegetation to limit the deposition of sand coming from the desert but often, especially in the first sessions, the riders encounter sandy residues deposited on the asphalt and have to do some laps to clear the trajectory.

Since it was inaugurated, the circuit has never been resurfaced and therefore offers a very worn surface that requires tyres with good grip, able to compensate for the natural one lost over the years by the asphalt. The tyres must ensure a good compromise between the stability of the front axle during rough and demanding braking and a good level of traction especially on the rear, in order to correctly set the trajectories in the fast corners. The front tyre must be able to absorb the high power accumulated during braking and at the same time counteract the high risk of crushing, while for the rear you have to opt for a soft compound, capable of effectively imprinting the road surface and providing at the same time adequate traction.

The solutions for the WorldSBK and WorldSSP600 classes

For the last round of the season, Pirelli brings a total of 2199 tyres to Qatar to meet the needs of the WorldSBK and WorldSSP600 classes.

For the WorldSBK class, the riders will have three front solutions and as many for the rear in addition to the supersoft qualifier option, available both in standard 200/60 size and in the bigger 200/65, which can be used by the riders in the second session of Superpole®.

At the front the development SC1 V0952, a known and appreciated tyre by the riders, will be joined by the SC1 X0417 in bigger 125/70 size that debuted in the round of Misano Adriatico. The development SC2 X0605, third option, was introduced in Brno and also brought to Misano and Portimão and, compared to the standard SC2, offers better solidity and precision and should guarantee a more regular wear.

For the rear there will betwo solutions in soft and one in medium compound. Those in soft compounds are the standard SC0 and the development SC0 W1002. The latter, introduced in Imola and also brought to Donington and Laguna Seca, is presented in the innovative 200/65 size which offers a wider contact area with consequent better distribution of efforts and should guarantee even higher grip.

The last option is the development SC1 X0140 introduced in Aragón and also taken to Assen, Brno and Magny-Cours and designed to offer a high level of performance and limited wear, indicated in case the circuit is particularly dirty, maybe in the first sessions.

In the WorldSSP600, there will be five dry solutions, two for the front and three for the rear. On the front, the riders will be able to choose between the development SC1 X0012 in soft compound and the development SC2 X0582, designed to offer greater grip and more contained wear than the standard solution.

At the rear there are the standard SC0 and the development SC0 X0633, introduced in Misano and also brought to Portimão, Magny-Cours and San Juan Villicum. Compared to the standard solution it should offer better resistance and constant performance. The development SC1 X0093, already brought by Pirelli to Aragón, Assen, Misano and Portimão and designed to guarantee a high level of performance and limited wear, especially in the case of a dirty circuit, is the third option.
