Goodyear’s five tips when leaving on holidays

As the summer holidays have finally kicked off, millions of people will travel by car in July and August for their much-anticipated and well-deserved holiday abroad. Few things, however, spoil a pleasant journey like major congestion, unexpected toll roads or needless fines. Use these five tips to have a carefree and utterly pleasant exodus!

1. Avoid the busiest weekends

Driving to or returning from your holiday might suit you best during the weekends of July 27-29, August 3-5 and 10-12. Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea – and it happens year after year. Instead, try to plan your journey during the week because this will save you a lot of time on the road. But whenever you set out, don’t forget to take a break every 2 hours. That allows you to stretch your legs and your kids to unleash their unmatched energy.

2. Know your Umweltzones and péages

To reduce congestion and the impact on the environment, almost all major cities in Germany have installed Umweltzones. This means that you must buy a vignette at the German country border to be able to drive through them. You’ll find the same for the French cities of Paris, Lyon, Montpellier, Grenoble, Strasbourg, Bordeaux and Lille. You’ll have to pay to drive on certain European highways, too. Driving from Paris to Bordeaux will cost you 59,8 euros; from Milan to Firenze 32,7; while crossing the Luxemburg border on your way to Lyon will set you back 31,5.

3. Avoid major highways

Although Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV tires enable bigger cars to achieve their best performance on the Autobahn – as an optimized construction improves an SUV’s handling – you might want to skip the German A3 and A8 due to the great chance of getting stuck in traffic jams. The same goes for the A2 in Switzerland, the Austrian A10 as well as the French Boulevard Périphérique and Autoroute du Soleil. If you drive an electric car, download an app that shows electric charging stations to plan a route with the necessary charging stops.

4. Read the news

Road regulations change from time to time. Did you know for instance, that from July 1, you are not allowed to smoke in a car in France in the presence of a minor? The French government also requires you to have two alcohol testing kits in your car, and it has lowered the speed limit on roads with one lane from 90 km/h to 80 km/h.

5. Keep your distance

If you drive a SUV, Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV tires give you a shorter braking distance of 1,2 meters on dry roads compared to the next best competitor. But you still need to be careful. If you’re driving 120 km/h, you should drive at least 60 meters behind the car in front of you. In foggy or wet weather, increase your distance even more and ensure you put on your headlights for safety’s sake.
