Pirelli dominates the Grand Prix of Great Britain at Matterley Basin

Jeffrey Herlings wins both races in MXGP and increases his lead in the Championship; overall victory belongs to Pauls Jonass in MX2

Matterley Basin (Great Britain), 4 June 2018 – The Matterley Basin circuit hosted the Grand Prix of Great Britain, for the ninth round of 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship. Beautiful spring weather graced the weekend and a track of medium-hard soil and is considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular of the whole series. The SCORPION™ MX32™ Mid Soft was used by all Pirelli-equipped riders with the factory KTM riders sweeping both classes and holding leading positions in both the MXGP and MX2 standings.

Jeffrey Herlings won again in MXGP. It was a seventh seasonal victory for the fast Dutchman who again managed to overtake Antonio Cairoli in the final part of both races and leads the championship standings with 54 points ahead of the Sicilian. The nine-time world champion was the only rider able to fight on equal terms with Herlings. Despite a painful ankle it was a great race for Romain Febvre who scored third place. It was a positive day also for Tim Gajser who finished fifth overall.

MX2 Grand Prix thrived on the challenge between Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado. On this occasion it was the reigning champion who sealed overall victory by winning both races. The young Spaniard tried to beat his teammate but had to settle for second place, in spite of some valiant efforts all the way to the chequered flag. An excellent performance was enjoyed by Calvin Vlaanderen, who obtained the third place overall, and Thomas Covington shone in fifth.

There was also success for Pirelli in the fifth round of the EMX250 European championship thanks to the home rider Steven Clarke. The Italian brand also toasted victory in the Veteran World Cup - a single round affair staged at Matterley Basin - with Martin Zerava second and who led home two-time world champion Mickael Pichon.

There is no break for riders and teams with Saint Jean d’Angely welcoming the Grand Prix of France for the tenth round of twenty in the 2018 FIM World Motocross Championship.
