Until May 25, Imprévisible by DONATO PICCOLO at the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in Milan

From April 11 to May 25, 2018, the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro in #milano will host a solo show by #donatopiccolo (Rome, 1976), entitled Imprévisible.

This exhibition is the first appointment with the new cycle of the Project Room with which the Foundation makes its space and skills available to young curators and artists, and  aims at keeping the public up-to-date with the latest trends in contemporary sculpture.

The Project Room 2018 has been entrusted to Flavio Arensi, who has created Proust’s Room, a project in three acts which provides an opportunity to watch society’s and human events through sounds, absences and presences, of the past like the future. The three phases that follow each other in this room make up a single reflection on the role of sculpture in this historical moment. As Arensi states, “with the work of the three artists involved in the Project Room 2018 we are trying to regain the idea of an enlarged conscience which no longer uses the most traditional sculptural techniques but rather seeks out the deepest concepts through technology and space”.

For the first of these three appointments, #donatopiccolo presents a group of original works brought together under the term Imprévisible, [unprevisible] a French word created through the union of unpredictable and invisible, which perceptively synthesises the short-circuit between nature and artifice that characterises the Roman artist’s machine-like insect.

The analysis of the existential gap that distinguishes man from natural and artificial reality, in relation to the dimension of time, has always been at the centre of Piccolo’s considerations, who brings his robotic sculptures to the Foundation; these are objects/subjects able to interact with the visitors. The robotic mechanisms and artificial intelligence allow the works to move and register the reactions of the public which consequently form the basis of the following actions. Piccolo’s sculptures, which seem to learn and act autonomously, define the field of human absence.

The initiative, under the patronage of the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region, is one of the official events of “Art Week”, the programme promoted by the Milan council during Miart.

Donato Piccolo (1976) works between Rome where he was born and lives, Berlin and New York. He took part in the 52nd and 54th Venice Biennale and has exhibited in important museums throughout the world, among which: the Hermitage, St Petersburg (Russia 2017); Himalayas Art Center, Shanghai (China, 2017); MAXXI, Rome (Italy, 2017); Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales, Havana (Cuba, 2016).
