The #abarth #racing weekend started with an assertive win in the two-wheel ranking and an excellent ninth overall place in the Rallye Villa de Adeje in Tenerife (SPA) of the SMC Junior Motorsport team #abarth 124 rally driven by Spaniards Alberto Monarri and Rodrigo Sanjuán.
The narrow roads of the Atlantic island exalted the features of the #abarth 124 rally allowing the Spanish team to secure a clear win in the Two-Wheel Drive and R-GT categories in this round of the Spanish Tarmac Championship. With this result, Alberto Monarri (SPA) is now leading the general ranking in the Spanish Two-Wheel Drive Trophy. The #abarth 124 rally dominated the race and took the lead from the first test stage. By modifying its set-up, the driver made the car even more efficient and increased his lead, winning nearly all the timed trials.
"The balance was very positive after the first three races. We took the championship lead despite having skipped the first race of the series. The performance of our #abarth 124 rally was superior to all the other two-wheel drive cars", declared a satisfied Monarri after crossing the finish line.
The next appointment of the Spanish Tarmac Championship will be the Rallye Ourense Termal, next June 8 and 9.
The wet weather took a toll at the #abarth Selenia Trophy races in #lecastellet, France, where only one of the two rounds was held. A severe downpour forced to call off the event after a spectacular first heat in which Italian Cosimo Barberini won again. It was his third success in three races and he is now leading the #abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione and #abarth 500 Assetto Corse championship rankings.
The qualifier sessions were held in fine weather with Barberini (ITA) earning the pole position at end of the last lap. Race1, on the other hand, started at 9 o'clock on Sunday morning under heavy rain behind the safety car. Finn Juuso Pajuranta leapt ahead at the green light and Barberini was overtaken by young Italian Andrea Mabellini as well.
After a few laps, Pajuranta skidded off the track and Barberini gained the lead again, with Mabellini in hot pursuit. They finished in this order.
"Racing in this weather was tough with a lot of aquaplaning caused by the puddles on the track", Barberini declared after finishing. "It was an exciting fight and I only just managed to win the day".
The third place went to the promising rally driver Frenchman Nicolas Ciamin, who usually competes in the French championship with the Team Milano #racing #abarth 124 rally. "It was a tough debut, in heavy rain on a difficult track. The car reacted well and I managed to keep up with the leaders, who are all strong drivers. No-one was going to give up and at the end I was pleased with by place on the podium", he declared at the end of the race.
Young Italian Aurora Coria won in the #abarth 500 Assetto Corse and Woman's categories.
Despite the rain, many French #abarth Club enthusiasts and members of the Scorpionship (the official #abarth community which counts over 100,000 associates) flocked to the time-honoured Paul Ricard #racing track to cheer on the drivers and enjoy a day under the sign of the scorpion, joining the hospitality events and experiencing the pre-race excitement on the pit lane with the 695 and 595 cars of the Trophy.
The young promises of the #italianf4championship powered by #abarth also measured up on the French circuit and staged three spectacular races behind the wheel of the Tatuus single-seaters propelled by #abarth T-Jet engines. Race1 in fine weather on Saturday was won by Brit Olli Caldwell, who finished ahead of Dane Frederic Vesti, who would then go on to win the two races in the rain on Sunday. With a second place in Race2 and a fifth place in Race3, Brazilian Enzo Fittipaldi - grandson of the two-times Formula 1 champion Emerson - is still leading the general ranking of the championship.
