Teocchi, the ballet to success with Bianchi

A tough career start, then Ghirotto and Ferrero’s support led her to the Youth Olimpics’ crown and the 2016 CX European title

There was no rest for #chiarateocchi after the gold medal in Pontchateau. Even a race-free weekend couldn’t keep the Team #bianchi Countervail's rider, crowned Under 23 CX European champion with #bianchi Zolder disc just a few days ago, away from rain, wind and mud. "I made the best of a hole in my calendar to make some quality training and get ready for the upcoming fixtures. I am honored of wearing this beautiful jersey, but it also comes with a responsibility, as you always have to show up at 100%,” Chiara explains. The 20-year-old rider from Bergamo has been riding with #bianchi MTB Team for seven seasons, and on Saturday October 29th added another laurel to remarkable list of achievements by edging France’s Hélène Clauzel to the finish of the Cyclocross European Championships. Previously in her career, Teocchi had claimed gold at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing 2014, as well as several national titles in both Cross Country and Cyclocross.

GOLDEN PONTCHATEAU
Teocchi built the Europeans' success in the days before the race. "As I often do, I tested the course over and over, carefully reviewing the few spots where I could make a difference. I focused only on the race. During the warm-up, I felt like everything was ticking just fine – legs and head. I was feeling good.” That sometimes doesn’t prove enough though. “You have to deal with rivals, and I had not faced mine yet in the season. So my tactic was quite straightforward: fast start, accelerate at the halfway and then, in case, put everything left in the sprint. It worked out.”
A few days later, Teocchi already realized how a light fabric jersey can prove pretty heavy indeed. "It has pros and cons. It comes with responsibility, as you always have eyes on you. But that also means confidence: it’s a clear evidence of what you are worth as a rider.” Her debut in the new outfit came in Milan, at GP Guerciotti: “It was nice to show up in the new jersey. Third place wasn’t a bad result, if you take emotion and some minor post-title relaxation into account.”

FROM LOOPS TO CIRCUITS
As a child, Chiara was a promising dancer: "I practiced classic dance until seven. They said I could make a career. What about the bike? I rode with training wheels until eight. Then I started attending my father's MTB school, but at the beginning I was always the very last in the races: they often had to wait for me at the end. After three months, I was still struggling with the shift, but then..."
After the first win, Chiara never stopped anymore: "The passion grows when your sacrifices are rewarded". The best victory? "Hard to tell. The gold medal at Nanjing's Youth Olympics was the hardest earned: in a short time I also had to get accustomed to BMX, a discipline I had never experienced before. Anyway, I feel the CX European Champs as my biggest victory so far.”

RAISED BY LEGENDS: GIMONDI AND BIANCHI
Chiara can rely on the wisdom of Team President Felice Gimondi: "He was really happy when he called me after the race in Pontchateau. ‘So you won it!’, he said. He congratulated me, and have someone like Gimondi congratulating is really something. I love listening the story of his feats from his voice. He gave me plenty of suggestions, but I made his mantra mine: “Heads down and push hard”.
Teocchi rides the #bianchi Methanol models in Cross Country races and Zolder disc in the cyclocross. "Riding a #bianchi bike is the best an Italian rider can ask for. #bianchi is the history of cycling and to be part of the #bianchi MTB Team gives you the opportunity to use the best materials, cutting-edge technologies and top bikes studied for every need, like the revolutionary Methanol CV with Countervail technology".
Chiara Teocchi joined the #bianchi MTB Team at 12. Junior team's manager Andrea Ferrero refined and enhanced her talent: "He has been like a second father for me. In difficult days, he never stopped believing in me. He played a key role in the training for the Youth Olympics: I wouldn’t be boasting a gold and a silver medal without his crucial support.". Entering the Under 23 Team, Chiara passed under the guidance of Massimo Ghirotto: "He's a great professional, I had a great feeling with him from the first day. We don't talk only about races and training: we have built a good relationship".

SAGAN AND RAINBOW DREAMS
Besides Gimondi, Ghirotto and Ferrero's teaching, Teocchi is inspired by a contemporary cycling's champion: Peter Sagan. "I wish I had a likewise personality. He's an excellent athlete and a cheerful person". Chiara also admires Marco Aurelio Fontana: "We have met often in the National team, he's a committed professional but also an easy going and happy-go-lucky guy".
Started with a European title and two podium spots in Italy, the 2016-2017 CX season is still a long way to go and Chiara is fully convinced about her goals: "Racing with the Women Elite in World Cup rounds will raise the bar, and help me to improve. At the same time, I will have the opportunity to focus on the possible rivals for the World Championships, the most important fixture of the season". What does Chiara see for her future in ten years? "I think I will still be on my bike, still on the front-line and living some experiences abroad".
