The VI edition of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture: documentary exhibition

The VI edition of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture will be celebrated in the month of October when, on the occasion of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the top three projects will be awarded, and a documentary exhibition will be set up that will present all the 86 projects that have participated in this sixth edition.

Starting the first days of October, in the courtyard of the Palazzo Broletto, a documentary exhibition will bring together all the projects that participated in the VI edition of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture. They will be set up in a self-supporting structure under the portico and will remain visible to the public until mid-October.

Images of the exterior and interior spaces will be presented for each project, accompanied by technical drawings that, with scientific rigor, illustrate the creation of the various architectures, so that they are comprehensible not only to professionals, but to the general public, as well. Also on display will be the model created by the winner, the Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo. The model of the Church of Iesu, in San Sebastian, will then be donated to the Frate Sole Foundation.

The official awards ceremony will be held Tuesday, October 4th in an evocative venue in the beautiful city of #pavia. The day will begin with an institutional #event, and the presence of illustrious officials, during which the prizes will be awarded. Rafael Moneo, first prize winner with the Church of Iesu, in San Sebastian, will receive a cash contribution of 15,000 Euros and the, by now famous, “Cieldoro”, the polished steel reproduction of a sculpture created by Father Costantino for the first edition of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture (1996). The architects, ThuHuongThi Vu and TuanDungNguyen, are the runners-up with the New Church of the Parish of Kadon, in Don Duong, in the Province of LamDong, in Vietnam, and will be awarded 10,000 Euros. The German architectural firm, Schulz und Schulz, who won third place with the new St. Trinitatis Church in the city of Leipzig (Germany), will receive a cash prize of 5,000 Euros, while special honorable mentions will go to: Chapel of St. John the Baptist, constructed in the Johannisthal district of Berlin by the German architectural firm, Brückner & Brückner, as well as the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, designed by the Spanish architect, Alejandro Beautell, in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, will receive a plaque specially created by the Frate Sole Foundation.

After the prizes have been awarded, the winner will give a speech, and each of the finalists will explain their projects to the audience. The architect, Luigi Leoni, president of the Fondazione Frate Sole, and close associate of Father Costantino’s, will also speak after the ceremony, followed by other illustrious guests. This will be an opportunity to reflect on the debate regarding contemporaneity in the themes of sacred architecture and more advanced perspectives, topics that are dear to Father Costantino, founder of this Award and also an artist projected towards the future and always on the move towards innovation.
The day will end with Conversazioni Pavesi - spiritual conversations that will include a discussion with the winner, Rafael Moneo, and Susanna Zatti, director of the Civic Museums of the Visconti Castle of #pavia. Far from a lecture, instead, theses Conversations are proposed as an informal debate on the theme of contemporary architecture. Urged by Susanna Zatti and by the public, Rafael Moneo will speak of several of the many topical ideas that his own art offers, therefore, stimulating thoughts and considerations.

In occasion of the awards ceremony, a scientific catalog will also be published relating to the projects of the VI edition of the International Prize for Sacred Architecture. The catalog will include the images, drawings, and technical reports of the three winning projects and the two honorable mentions, in addition to the jury’s motivations regarding their decisions, the biographies of the architects, and a small part reserved for the other participants in the 2016 edition.

The International Prize for Sacred Architecture is organized by the Frate Sole Foundation and sponsored by local authorities and national ecclesiastical and cultural institutes, such as the Pontifical Commission for the Ecclesiastic Cultural Heritage of the Holy See, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, the National Council of Architects, the Order of Landscaping Architects of the Province of #pavia, the Diocese of #pavia, the Municipality of #pavia, the University of #pavia, the National Bureau for Sacred Buildings, and the Province S.
