Gajser retakes World Championship lead with seventh podium in Germany

Tim Gajser continued his remarkable season today by stepping onto the podium again with second overall, maintaining his 100 per cent podium record from 2016, and in doing so returning the championship leader’s red plate to the 243 #honda #crf450rw.

The #mxgp of Germany was a frantic and dramatic affair, but Gajser still made the best of the challenges that were thrown his way. In race one he was again in a tooth-and-nail battle with Antonio Cairoli, the duo taking turns at leading and trading fastest laps. At Cairoli’s final push, Gajser wisely rolled off the throttle a little to settle for second, deciding that when the track was as deeply rutted as it was today, discretion was the better part of valour.

Coming back strongly in race two, it was the Slovenian chasing his Team HRC teammate Evgeny Bobryshev as the pair slotted into second and third on their CRF450RWs.

As Gajser trailed Bobby, a small but unfortunate crash in the first third of the race meant that he slipped to ninth, and a Latvia-style recovery ride was again the order of the day. Amid a multitude of crashes as others were caught out by the gusting winds and deeply-rutted track, GT243 fought back to fourth overall, setting up a #honda double-podium as he took second overall ahead of Bobryshev in third.

As well as leading the World Championship by eight points, #honda also now lead the Manufacturers’ standings.

Next up is the team’s home round, as #mxgp travels to the Grand Prix of Trentino in Italy next weekend.
