The Big Cretto of Gibellina by Alberto Burri is officially opened thirty years after the start of its implementation

Press release available only in Italian

On October 17, the Big Cretto of Gibellina will be officially opened. Exactly thirty years after the start of its implementation (1985), perhaps the most famous work of Alberto Burri has found its completion. Last May was, in fact, concluded the yard that has completed the "Great Cretto", as conceived and defined by Burri. As is well known, Gibellina (Valle del Belice, Sicily) was destroyed by the earthquake of 1968. Many famous artists, in response to the call of Ludovico Corrao, then mayor of that city, joined with enthusiasm and generosity for founding of new Gibellina in another place, with projects of squares, architecture and monumental works. Even Burri, invited in 1981, decided to intervene, but choose to work on the ruins of the same old Gibellina. The remains of the city were incorporated into the cement repeating the old urban plan. The labyrinth as a white shroud covered the ruins of the earthquake, recalling with fissures of Cretto the destructive event and offering the community the symbolic dimension of a new beginning.
